About Durham Beat Magazine

Durham Beat on Patreon is an engagement space for our fans and readers. This is where you can subscribe to our magazines and shirts, join us behind the scenes in everything we do, and support us and the community of artists with whom we collaborate. We offer 3 levels ranging from $5 to $25 per month, all of which are designed to give you access to us and the work we do.

ABOUT US
Durham Beat is an arts & culture magazine practicing in the style of Gonzo Journalism. Published quarterly, each issue of our magazine is dedicated to a focused examination of one broad cultural topic, which we explore in-depth and in collaboration with an artist working in that field. With every issue of our magazine, we create a limited run t-shirt designed by the featured artist. Profits from the shirt are split with that artist. While it's nice to be featured in an art magazine, we want our approach to magazines to be something more: a direct source of income for the artists with whom we collaborate. We believe in the economic enfranchisement of artists and our business model reflects this at every level.

In addition to our magazines and shirts, we also curate and host a monthly art market with our friends at Fullsteam Brewery in Durham. Our market offers free vending space for artists and guaranteed pay for performing musicians. We also occasionally host shows, dance parties, and interactive live art events at venues and off-beat locations around Durham and the Triangle area.

Our website, durhambeat.com, functions as an online publication where we publish reviews, reactions, thoughts, and other musings about creative endeavors in our area, whether that's music, beer, theatre, visual art, shows, or anything else that enlivens the lives of locals.

We believe that to tell a story of excellent quality and deepest connectivity with an audience, you have to be willing to get involved, to be vulnerable, and to fundamentally engage with the community. A community is not just a city and the people living in it. A community is a coming together of people who share a desire to feel connected to each other and the world around them. For us, that sense of community is driven by the experience of art and culture. We believe that art is a fundamental part of human life and plays an essential role in human society. We want to share in all of this with you. This is the mindset that lives at the heart of everything we do. We are grateful for your support, your readership, and your community spirit. Thank you for being here.
