About Donny Yi George

Hi, I'm Donny and I'm an indie artist just trying to make cool stuff whether that's comics, music or video games. I don't fit well into industry or institutional conventions, so I'm creating my own way, thanks to patrons like you.

Thanks for joining me on this journey, this quest for artistic freedom. Along the way, I hope to inspire, educate and entertain you with a deeper look into my creative process and loads of high quality / high definition content. Patrons get free downloads and exclusive access, plus you get to support me and subvert industry / institutional control of the arts and cultural creation.

///  FAQ

What is the distinction between an art project and a cultural product? Art projects are "art for art's sake," that is, art created for expression, exploration, investigation without any immediate commercial application. These art projects are usually the germ for what can become cultural products, which are a combination of industrial processes (such as printing, video, mass distribution) and art.

For example, a drawing, or a series of figure drawings might be an art project, whereas prints or a printed book of the series would be a cultural product. There is also an intermediate state, which I'll call the art piece, which is the actual original drawing itself (the actual graphite on paper) which in itself can be sold as a commercial product, but hasn't been subjected to industrial processes of reproduction and thus is not cultural product (unless, that is, the reproduction is part of the art project, which is a whole other topic).

So, what is the art project, if not the art piece? The art project is the intangible idea, the execution and cultural significance of the art piece, the artistic intention of the artist, which is crystallized in the art piece. The art piece is then the tangible basis for industrial cultural reproduction.

But, are comics, video games, music... art? Art is whatever an artist creates and calls art. Comics, music, painting etc. are just different art-form mediums. Fine Art, Underground Art, Performance art, Dubstep, are different categories of art. The actual physical copies of comics, the wav file you're listening to, those are cultural products.

So anyone can make art?
Yes, if they consider themselves an artist and if they consider what they make as art. Like the revolution brought by the Protestant Reformation in Christianity, intermediaries no longer stand between the faithful and God, between the artist and art. The Salon des Refusés was the beginning and Marcel Duchamp made it official.

Can you make art that's not art? Well, it's either art or it isn't. You can change your mind if you want though.

Can other people tell you your art is not art? No. People can discuss the merits of your art and whether they like it or not, but creating art is what the artist does. They can try to say that your art is not art, but it doesn't matter.
