Hi - I’m Dave Warnock, a former conservative Evangelical pastor and church leader for almost 40 years. I began a process of deconversion several years ago. At first calling myself an agnostic, I gradually began to embrace the word ‘Atheist’, as I do what I can to de-stigmatize this word (which simply means “non-theist”) and seek to show that atheists can be good people exhibiting the same morals and values as people of faith.

I gradually and painfully moved away from Christianity when the tenants of my life-long faith no longer aligned with my core beliefs of toleration and acceptance of all people, and in living and loving life for the “moments” that we are given in this present life; versus the judgment, condemnation, and exclusivity I experienced within the Christian faith that offered a promise of an “afterlife”… but only for those who believed the “correct” things. My leaving the Christian faith came at huge cost with the loss of almost my entire community of friends, the breakup of my 37 year marriage, and the Christian “shunning” by two of my three children, which has also deprived me of being a part of my six grandchildren’s lives to this day.

Given how life can be random, chaotic, and unpredictable, on February 26, 2019, I received the devastating diagnosis of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). A series of doctor visits, a blood test, MRI, more doctor visits, and finally an EMG at one of the most prestigious hospitals in the country was followed by the cold and clinically fatal diagnosis - along with instructions to put my clothes back on and where to find the elevator outside the exit from the neurologist’s office. No follow-up plan…no counselor referral…just to go home and die in 3-5 years.

Dying Out Loud
Since my diagnosis of ALS five months ago, I began to talk honestly about dying as an atheist and living your best moments while you can. This became what is now known as "Dying Out Loud". It has become a bittersweet pleasure for me to speak on podcasts, live, and in-person and through any other vehicle that has presented itself to me for this subject. I have found somewhat to my surprise that this is resonating with multitudes of people and I find myself grateful and humbled and wanting to talk about this as much as I can while I still can.
So this is what Dying Out Loud is all about: speaking about my experience and getting the chance to encourage others to become more present in their own lives.

Patreon / Paypal
I have set up a Patreon account so that supporters can commit a monthly amount to share the cost of my speaking expenses on behalf of communities that may not have the funds to cover those costs. If you'd prefer to make a one-time lump-sum donation, you can donate via Paypal at this link. My dream is that financial obstacles wouldn't prevent me from getting the message to as many people as possible in the short amount of time that I have left.
