About Earth Practice

Earth Practice is the song-family of Yin, Yam and Jessi from Bellingham, WA.

Drawing inspiration from aspects of everyday life, the members of Earth Practice offer powerful medicine through simple means; creating warm, easy-to-catch songs that activate the heart and feel good inside. Their unique blend of musical influences have drawn comparisons to everything from 90s r&b to doo-wop to devotional chanting - often using only sounds and rhythms made by their hands, feet and voices.

WHY WE SING

Music heals.
In our family, the language of music is spoken fluently, and often. We do it as a means of learning and growing together. When we’re feeling good, we sing about it. When we’re feeling bad, we sing about it. When there’s heartbreak, confusion celebration, loss, insight…we sing it out, together.

Having been a part of weekly song circles and community choirs for years (including public song offerings, heart-opening workshops and ceremonial spaces), we believe that music is a shared language between people, and a medicine by which communities are made stronger and more vibrant.

WHY WE'VE STARTED A PATREON
(so many reasons...)

1) WE LIKE TO SHARE.

We feel the songs belong to more than just us. In our singing-collective the process of 'writing songs' looks more like listening than writing. We listen for the songs in our everyday life. While raising families, working manual labor jobs, living our daily lives, etc. we have discovered that there are often songs that 'come through'. Similar to hearing a song drifting on some invisible wind, or hidden inside the rhythm of walking feet, the melody and words will start to emerge. It’s honestly a deep mystery to us how the songs come through. How could we truly claim ownership? Patreon gives us a forum to share.

2) PEOPLE HAVE ASKED FOR THE MUSIC

In the last year of sharing music we've had many people ask 'how can I hear more?' Currently we have no way to make that happen (unless you are one of the lucky buddies who gets 7am phone calls from Yam singing into their voicemail *see tier: ESPECIAL). At shows, people have expressed feeling impacted by songs and wanting to be able to keep singing to themselves, like a kind of mantra or affirmation. Our friends on the east coast, families and newfound friends have asked for a way to keep hearing this music. Patreon gives us a way to share regularly.

3) WE HAVE AN ABUNDANCE

Since we’ve begun singing together we have collectively logged hundreds (literally, hundreds) of songs. It feels almost uncomfortable to hold this many songs and not give them out. When you have an abundance it’s good to give away and make room for more. While we love these songs dearly, we get to live with them everyday. We would love to make them available for others, and make room for the new songs that seem to arrive daily.

This is where Patreon seems like a great space for us. It enables us to share and also generate the means for sharing. As working people and parents, the time we put in for practice, playing live and trying to record takes resources. Support through Patreon will ultimately enable us to record music - the best way we can imagine to share music widely while still fulfilling the duties of our lives. It also gives us wiggle room for some other kinds of support (like paying for childcare while playing shows, buying instruments and eating pizza together after we play).

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT AS A SUBSCRIBER?

As a Patreon supporter of Earth Practice, you’ll likely receive goodies like live recordings, instructional videos on how to develop your singing and 'song-catching' abilities, and probably some content from Waldo as well (if you don't know him, you'll know soon enough). You’ll get some of the juicy stories behind songs (Did you know the songs 'Crawlspace' and 'Crawlspace 2' were literally written inside a crawlspace? Or that 'Awake & Aware' happened while trying to avoid a car accident?). As artists, we hope to offer transparency into our process, our life and the lessons we are learning.
