EDGE OF THE UNIVERSE - HOW IT ALL BEGAN

My name is Duane Haylett. I was drawing from as early as I can remember and at the age of 8 I started writing and drawing my own comic books. I spent much of my time adventuring outdoors and I didn’t have much entertainment as we didn’t even have a video machine. Creating comics was a way of imagining my own adventures.

It was as if when I was making comics I was living in the world I was drawing. I guess that is the beauty of imagination.

At a very young age I was able to draw fairly realistic drawings but my favourite comics were Tintin and so I soon began to emulate Herge’s ‘ligne claire’ style.

My absolute favourite movie which was about 10 000 miles above anything else was Star Wars. As I said we didn’t have a video machine so I basically got to see it once or twice at a friend’s house but I was completely fascinated with it.

In 1999 I began my EDGE OF THE UNIVERSE comic book series. The original title was ‘EDENTIA - The Adventures of Corgan and Occy’.

Then in 2004 I self-published my first full colour high-quality comic book. I loaned a large sum of money to print 1000 books and I had big plans. I went all out to make my business plan work but it completely failed. I lost money and I had a hard time paying back it back. It was a very painful experience but incredibly educational.

One thing I learned through losing money was that investors are cautious and so they should be. I also later realised that what I had produced wasn’t good enough. I had to get better.

I went through many years of trying to fix something that was broken and at the same time I was going through the trials of life. I went through so much pain and disappointment (including an RSI injury from computer work) and then someone gave me some advice. He told me that I should always have a 5 year plan. I took his advice. I decided I would never have it as good as some but in 5 years I was going to improve my life and the lives of my wife and 2 children.

I stopped believing that other people were going to fix things in my life. I had to take up the reigns like a responsible human being and fix everything myself.

I achieved many good things and amongst it all I put all my creative failures on the shelf. I decided to start from scratch slowly and in my spare time.

I also decided to make a comic book that I would be proud of. SUCCESS is to achieve a favourable result and so I decided that in order to ensure success I simply had to be happy with my end-product. If I made money from it then that was going to be my bonus.

So I did it!

I created a comic book that I am very proud of. Similar to a Tintin book, it is a high quality 62 page graphic novel which can be purchased on Amazon as a paperback. Here is a link to my comic book on Amazon dot com but you can also find it on other Amazon sites. Just search for 'edge of the universe comic'.

Having done that I began to discover all these other new ways of making money with my book online.

Slowly money is trickling in and I’ve started the rough pages for the next book in my series.
