Hello everyone!

Welcome to my Patreon page! My name is Kristen Puckett and I'm a freelance illustrator and ceramicist from Southern Ohio currently living in El Paso, TX. I studied fine art at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, earning my BFA in 2017. I have several years of drawing experience (I started at a very young age) and currently produce a variety of fine art prints, illustrative ceramics, graphic designs for apparel, a coloring book, and other freelance projects. I prefer working with a dip pen, acrylic washes, and fine tipped, Micron pens, but also dabble in watercolor, charcoal, digital, acrylic, and good ol' graphite. During the warmer months, I spend most of my time outside working with clay; I make both functional and sculptural work, though I love making monstrous figures the most!

The places I've traveled, people I've met, and things I've read inspire me to create new worlds for others to explore and creatures to discover. I hope that through this Patreon I can inspire others, share my knowledge and experience, and create more art.

My art usually revolves around mythology and folklore, focusing on cryptid creatures or otherworldly monsters, but I also make up a lot of my own fantasy worlds and fantastic beasts. I also enjoy drawing people and everyday animals.

Backers will be accepted from Oct. 1st @ 12 am - Oct. 31 11:59 pm

I'm working on a complete set of every known creature/prominent paranormal being/mythical figure from the world listed from A-Z (which could also be broken down into smaller sets). Currently, I'm working on 3 about Kentucky, West Virginia, & Ohio because:
  • I grew up in the tri-state area
  • I am familiar with most of its relatable lore
  • West Virginia is particularly well-known for its large number of cryptid/paranormal activity
  • They seemed like good places to start, featuring well-known monsters like the Mothman, Flatwoods Monster, Pope Lick Monster, and Loveland Frogmen
  • The areas also have a large supply of old wives' tales and superstitions from Appalachian culture; I could use these to generate new creatures or explanations for the sayings

One additional reason I want to study and write about folk/mythological/cryptid creatures from these places (which, mostly lie on the Appalachian region) is because my whole I've been influenced to not be proud of where I came from or my heritage- by my own community and several family members. This set of books will celebrate great parts of Appalachian culture and history- storytelling, struggles of a hardy people, and the desire to believe in unseen monsters. However, I also want to address some of the feelings and generalizations associated with Appalachia, as well as our modern cultural struggles- poverty, drug use, lack of educational funding.
I was always told that if I wanted to be successful, I needed to leave this place. While plagued by hardship and negativity, the truly elusive beast is that Appalachia does have beauty and worth in its history, land, and living beings.

This is my list of creatures to document & illustrate so far:

West Virginia (so far 150 creatures; nearly complete list): Cumberland Dragon,West Virginia Yahoo, Giants, Sheepsquatch, The Stonemen, West Virginian Wendigo, Wetzel Co. Other Projects
The Summoners' Sketchbook is an in-progress graphic novel I'm writing/drawing (currently on hold). It is set in a distant future where an overlapping plane of existence is discovered, changing humanity's course forever. The story's tone is dark & the adventure fantastical -- filled with a lot of imagined creatures, environments to explore, & sects of people to meet. However, as a note, there is a lot of violence in the novel, though not overly explicit for the most part. I have drawn and written it by hand, using sketch paper and Master pens (my favorite for narrative drawing).

Subscriptions

For my supporters, I offer high resolution images of all of my artwork to view (as it is produced and for view only; no reproductions), as well as some downloadable/colorable illustrations here and there, access to all of my bestiary entries in text form (not formatted as they would be in the book and without pictures), in progress photos, updates, and polls for which entry/monster/ghost I should write/draw next.

I'd like to eventually send out monthly rewards- like commissions, doodles, and original artwork - and some of my ceramic dishware or sculptural work- to a random backer.

Funds

Funds go back into my studio for basic materials (and experimental ones) and allow me to continue to create lots of art!
