About Elli Beaven

Welcome to my corner of Patreon! This is where I will be sharing my plant dyeing and stitching as I sail the Mediterranean and beyond with my family on our catamaran. I invite you to join me as I explore the places we visit, discovering local plants and the colours they create on textiles and threads. I’ll also be sharing my current stitching projects, occasional tips and tutorials and more general thoughts on a creative life afloat. For higher tier subscribers I’ll be sending you quarterly parcels of the threads and fabrics I’ve dyed along the way to incorporate into your own work, whilst non-makers can to choose a small finished piece instead. This is very much a new and developing process for me but I am so looking forward to you joining me!

In June 2020 my family and I realised our long-held dream to move aboard a sailboat and sail the Mediterranean and beyond. No longer able to attend craft fairs or regularly update my online shop, Patreon offers a way for me to continue to create and share my work whilst generating a more reliable income. Rather than sporadic shop updates, I will now be able to plan and tailor my work according to my subscribers, as well as sharing the processes of creating that work in greater depth.

In the meantime, here's a little more about me: I have always been a keen stitcher, ever since  my Dad taught me use his sewing machine when I was a child and let me loose on a pile of old sheets. Over the years my interest in textiles ebbed and flowed but once I was introduced to quilt making in 2011, there was no turning back. At the time I was mid way through a PhD in German Visual Culture and had just had my first child. Quilt making was an ideal counterpoint both to the many hours in front of a computer and the repetitiveness of childcare. By 2017 I had had two more children and decided a life in academia was not for me. I formalised my quilt making work under the name Wholecloth Studio, offering one of a kind quilts, homewares and accessories made from high quality repurposed and waste textiles, later incorporating my own plant dyed textiles as well. I sold my work via my online shop and at craft fairs, wrote tutorials for magazines and taught quilt making workshops. In early 2020 I wrote a book sharing my love of repurposed textiles, freeform piecing, the Baptist Fan design and hand quilting. Conscious Crafts: Quilting will be published by Leaping Hare Press in June 2021 and is available for pre-order now.
