INTRODUCTION

Music has been a part of my life since the age of 2 when as I recall, it connected me with stories by awakening my emotions and opening my senses. My appreciation and respect for it’s power and beauty has led me on a journey through many countries, cities, people and places. I recognize that my love for it has only grown stronger and when I have the opportunity to escape into serenity, the beauty of art, internal strength, and magic are on my mind.

My focus is on creating art that encapsulates the dynamic movement of the modern diverse city. As a relatively solitary musician, I seek to find internal and external connections within the city on my journey of self discovery, and much of what you see are my discoveries along the way of the many faces which bring vibrance and movement to city life and urban environments. City spaces are nothing without them and the many activities and inhabitants. With the talents and education I have for composing, I’ve made it my mission to connect people and show them the beauty which exists around us in our everyday lives through music.

Harmonic Interventions Music Video
This video highlights the vibrant movement and variety of the city of LA through the eyes of a solo musician. In the 2 years in which I have lived in LA, I've met people from all walks of life and have been amazed at how I've been able to connect with them all in some way. My hope is that this
video introduces the inspiration that I've found from all of them and the practice of reminding myself of the beauty which exists all around us in our daily lives.

Soundproof Project
Previous successful projects include the site-specific immersive concert 'Soundproof' for which I was creator, artistic director, composer and violinist. Musicians performed out of windows in a circular architectural building. Audience and musicians could move around the building and hear the composition from different levels and perspectives. This project was supported by a grant from the city of Vienna, Austria

Social Scoring Project
In an effort to bring people from different communities and backgrounds together, I setup music events in cafes and bars across many different districts in Vienna. I brought together musicians from different backgrounds who experimented with working with others form unknown genres and worked to find a common language through which they could create music together. Rappers, classical musicians and jazz players came together to explore this project about communication and connectivity. I have published a book called Social Scoring available online on the many insights I gained from this project.

                                                       MY STORY
PAST

In Dublin where I grew up, there’s no shortage of history and magical places to visit. There’s a great amount of ancient mythology seeping out of every part of the city if one is aware of its heritage. The large number of works written by poets, writers, and musicians alike are testament to what the nature and landscapes of the area offer. I was an eager collector of anything related to Ancient Egypt, and that curiosity served as a starting point for what became my natural curiosity and desire to learn more about the seemingly endless amount of stories and discoveries that exist in books, films, and video games.

Excitement was building within me by then and I felt the desire for adventure. I’d leave shortly later for London to study violin performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and in my summers participated in music masterclasses at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. This short but intensive time created an openness and intimacy which is simply unrivaled in comparison to a regular college learning environment. We spent the entire day learning from watching one another's open but individual lessons. In the evenings, we embraced the time to exchange ideas and learn about one another’s cultures while exploring a foreign city which was new to all of us. Getting to know my colleagues in this way created an inclusive environment which offered me what I needed to see the best in everyone, and personally brought out the best in me. I was introduced to Austria and a new part of the world. I took a train from Salzburg to Vienna to check out the city immersed in historical musical heritage and artistic culture . Upon seeing that new culture, I fell so in love I wanted to immerse myself more which led to me applying to the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna for an exchange semester. I found it to be the perfect opportunity to fulfill my goal of becoming fluent with the German language.

I ended up extending the exchange semester into a full year before returning to London for my final year and graduating in 2009 with a BA in performance. I’ve just barely touched the surface of what my time in Vienna meant to me, and for good reason; I could carry on indefinitely. I met people from around the world there who were as open and excited as I was exploring the intricacies of society, relationships, and our shared passion for music. The openness and warmth I found there really can not be overstated. It’s what led me to developing my next and still continued project titled Social Scoring, which is largely about ‘Arts as Urban Innovation’, a topic in which a What I want to share is the hope and personal inspiration I’ve felt for what my peers and I can accomplish through our work and training as artists. I recognize a large part of my development requires isolation from the external world that is perhaps equal to the vibrant and immersive nature that I seek when connecting with the beauty that exists all around me. Recognizing this to me was a phenomena, but after sometime I’ve come to understand it simply as periods of time in life.

Throughout my life,  I felt like pieces of me were from different places in time and I had to uncover them by going there and immersing myself in an adventure. As I feel like time overlaps itself, and thus one can feel as if they’re stuck in the past, present or the future; my first site-specific compositional work was created in Vienna and was a concert series titled Time Series. It was an eye opening experience to see my music presented in a new way which provided a space that was profound for both audience and musician. The friction of time in contrast to the hopeful continuum of ideal moments, was the basis and reflection for my work that was experienced against the backdrop of a unique architectural space. Through my studies and exploration of music’s potential role in society and the success of my first immersive concert creation in Vienna, I began taking a closer look at spaces and the unique purpose of the unconventional concert experience.

A brief summer in NYC led me to apply for an MFA in film scoring at Columbia College Chicago as my deep passion in connecting music to visuals grew.  Following this, I made the move to Los Angeles and had some further revelations about growth, and specifically how to me, it’s a word synonymous with acceptance. Realizing this has opened the doors of perception and fueled the desire to explore the world around us. Most of my adult life has been lived in the ever changing city landscape, and reflecting on why, I believe it’s because I’m fascinated by the diversity of movement and energy of the people around me.

PRESENT

Now living in Los Angeles, composition for film and media is my current avenue of exploration. With it, the threads which bind and connect one's emotions to this powerful storytelling medium are my focus as I begin to take it apart and translate my discoveries and insights into the music. After the film or project speaks to me through multiple layers symbolically, the music then serves as a translator, and as the viewer absorbs the content, it is revealed and offered in a way which was not accessible before.

Having begun to learn to compose music by internalizing the dialogue and meaning behind another's art so that it connects with the heart, I’ve found it to be an avenue of work I love and is aligned with my greater aspirations for connecting humanity to the depth within. It’s a gift I’ve been given and music is my way of giving back that I hope offers a portal to an immersive space full of the beauty I’ve discovered which lives within us all.

This is my focus and thus the present. What I’m working on is what I could really use your help on bringing to the future!

FUTURE

Using music as a guide, I want to continue spreading universal concepts worthy of exploring deeper.

Increasing the connectivity of the people who make up cities is a major focal point of my current compositions. I’ve drafted some proposals for projects to take place within the city in interesting and unusual architectural places. The hope here is to create channels for healthy connections with the individuals in attendance and their surroundings which they may not have given much attention to before.

                                                 HOW YOU CAN HELP

Music is an essential part of creating and a large part of what defines the connection you have to the physical and internal world. As you may have gathered by now, it’s something I love to talk about and explore as well, and if you’d like to engage with me then I’ve created some ways to do that as detailed in the perks section.  In order to execute and implement my projects, I need the money for studio time, working with musicians, hiring creative minds who I respect and know can help bring my projects to fruition. I’d consider it an honor to have your support, and hope to make you feel that the opportunity to help me in these endeavors is yours as well.

All the best,

Emer Kinsella
