Émilie & Voltaire, is my new opera on universal themes. I’m Nicholas Gentile, Fine Music’s Kruger Scholar for 2019, and this year we’ll be recording the opera with full score and singers, in the Fine Music studios in Sydney.
We want to take you with us every step of the way. Subscribe and support this opera and we’ll share the thrilling journey with you. You’ll meet the singers online. You’ll see rehearsals and we’ll invite you to performances and send you exclusive recordings.

We’re bringing about a revolution in Australian music. When you contribute, even in the smallest way, you’ll be helping us to realise a dream—to create an international opera that Australians will be proud of, here and overseas.

We want to wow audiences here with Émilie & Voltaire and make it the first Australian opera to become a success overseas—maybe in France, where this real-life story is set. With your support, we can make it all happen. Fine Music 102.5 has fallen in love with this opera and we hope you will too.

It’s about a physicist, Émilie du Châtelet, who lives with her lover, the free-thinking Voltaire, at her chateau of Cirey. Their life is a magical blend of poetry, science and passion—until a friend arrives from the Academy of Sciences and Émilie’s secret comes out: she’s sent an essay to the Academy, an act unheard of for a woman, and her work is in direct competition with Voltaire. Voltaire is doubly jealous, because the so-called friend was once her lover. In this opera we see three geniuses together during one day the Enlightenment—and they are rivals, in science and in love.

Émilie & Voltaire explores the most notorious love affair of the Enlightenment and it speaks to our times, because Émilie is a woman burning to make her mark in a scientific world dominated by men. This opera is about gender equality, scientific truth and the power of love—what could be more relevant to today’s world?

We would love you to join us as we develop Émilie & Voltaire. Start small or think big: subscribe at step one and support the cast recording that I’m making with the help of Fine Music 102.5, and then consider contributing further. We’ll keep communicating with you at every major point. Just think: in your own way, however you wish, you can help us stage live performances, launch the opera at prestige venues, and send Émilie & Voltaire on tour and overseas.

We’re totally committed to this ground-breaking project. And we’re proud to share it with you. Subscribe if you can, in whatever way you choose, and thank you!
