About

We create & teach theater, with mindfulness.

What the heck does that mean?

We get that question a lot! So, here's a few examples of what it looks like:

  • REHEARSALS start and end on time. Artists learn mindful techniques like meditation, yoga and self-talk to bring themselves into their emotionally-vulnerable work, and to take themselves out. The process begins with a set of group guidelines created by the ensemble to support exploration and boundaries.
  • CLASSES provide opportunities for students to "step away" when they need to. Students learn the art of theater AND the art of balancing a creative life. Compassion and awareness are part of the curriculum.
  • PERFORMANCES are vibrant and moving because they are performed by an ensemble that has practiced deeply taking care of each other for the last several weeks.

Why it matters:

The arts has a prevailing message of "go, go, go" without consideration for the sustainability of making work.

I was told at a young age things like, "If you want to be artist, you must want to do that and ONLY that, otherwise you will fail." I was made to believe that if I wasn't internally tortured or depressed, that I wouldn't make good work.

This attitude drives artists into burnout, and worse.

We think the BEST art happens in a supportive environment where the life of the artist is acknowledged BEYOND the art. We know you've got a life outside the rehearsal room. Your dog Sparky. Your crazy grandma. Your beautiful child. Things that need your valuable attention.

We see that. We deeply respect it. We honor it.

Our mission

To create a new generation of artists. Artists grounded in mindfulness, compassion and awareness. Artists that know how to strike that work-life-art balance and nail it.

Our vision

We're slowly and sustainably moving toward the creation of the “Enso-Arts Hub”, a building that can serve not only as our base of operations, but as a refuge for artists and small - midsize theatre companies in the Portland community, looking for a place to meet, rehearse, take classes, and practice mindfulness.

TURN OUR TECHNICAL DIRECTOR POSITION INTO A PART-TIME JOB

Jordan Mackey, co-founder of the company, has served as our Technical Director since the beginning. Until this fall, he has been generously volunteering his time. Thanks to the phenomenal kindness of people like you, he is now receiving a very modest monthly stipend (woo hoo!).

We know that the time he puts in vs. what he is paid is still unbalanced -- and Enso is committed to paying its artists what they deserve.

This will eventually become a full-time position, but while the company is still growing, we intend to set reasonable mile-stones to ensure that we are meeting our goals sustainably, and can guarantee well-paying jobs for our artists in the long-term.
