ERAN UD TURAN - RELIVE THE SILK ROAD

New updates every Wednesday and Friday!

Join us on a journey from Ctesiphon to Dunhuang, through cities, castles, camps that are now almost mythological and lie in ruin under the desert sands of Persia and Central Asia.

Experience the court life of the Sasanians, the vibrant trading societies of the Sogdians, Buddhist pilgrimages in Inner Asia and India, silk brocades from China, glistening pearls from the Indian ocean.

WHAT IS ERAN UD TURAN?

Photos from our events in 2017

Eran ud Turan is the brainchild of Nadeem Ahmad, UK-born living history interpreter / re-enactor, who has been doing this since 2012. Eran ud Turan is the world's only living history group reconstructing the culture of the Sogdians, Sasanians, Bactrians, and surrounding cultures on the Silk Road. What started off as an exploration of his own past turned into a fully fledged living history society, complete with arms and armour, food, language and writing, and much more. We bring world history to life in a spectacular and colourful way, allowing visitors to get a real idea of life in ancient and early medieval Central Asia and Iran.

Why these particular cultures? Many of our members have ancestry going back to the greater Iranian world, which really took shape in late antiquity as a cultural unit and exported aspects of its art, ritual, and culture across the globe. We seek to recreate that old culture. We fell in love with the murals at Panjakent, Afrasiab, Varakhsha, among others, as soon as we saw them, as well as the wonderfully preserved silk brocades from across the Silk Road. Also, the food.

OUR DISPLAYS

Replica Sasanian sword, decorated with embossed feather motif, 6th - 7th Centuries

We have had the priviledge of working across the UK and Europe, from stately homes and castles, to museums, to university events. We pay great attention to detail and our displays and reconstructions have been commended by archaeologists, museum curators, historians, and other re-enactors, as well as the general public. You can find historic cooking, numismatics, writing and calligraphy, arms and armour, and textiles all at our displays - which we take care to catalogue by photo and video to share them with the wider world.

SUPPORT US

Our Sogdian display at Arbeia Roman Fort, 2017

Our online presence serves as a great teaching tool for students of history and archaeology of Central and Western Asia, as well as other re-enactors wanting to learn about cultures outside their normal sphere. We produce a large number of photos and short essays for those wanting to learn about the world of the ancient Silk Road, and plan on launching videos in the very near future as well. Your support allows us to keep building on our equipment - both replica historic equipment, made from original materials, for our displays, as well as modern equipment for capturing the moments, as well as building on our research library which we use to inform our impressions. We have a Patreon-only feed, that is not available on our Instagram of Facebook, which details the learning process and evidence used as well as the final impression, along with buildalongs and how-to tutorials. We're also available for one-on-one Q+A sessions.

Reconstruction of a Sasanian "Spahbed," late 6th - early 7th Century

Your support will help bring to life recreation of ancient cultures that, although now long gone, were important in shaping our modern world and reflect on where we have come from. The Silk Road has a global history and global appeal and we can learn lots from historic societies. Plus, who doesn't like looking at gorgeous Sogdian silk brocades and impressive Persian armour?

REWARDS

Some of the original coins in our collection, used for education purposes

Check out the sidebar for options of rewards. These start at a thank you note and access to our Patreon only feed, to receiving replica coins and writing (please provide your address for this!) and greetings cards and our yearbook, all the way to being able to participate in events as a guest (at our discretion after a safety briefing).

Additionally, as a bonus, the first 10 people to pledge $20 or more will also receive a Sogdian brush calligraphy (as opposed to pen) on imitation parchment of a word or short phrase of your choice - we will contact you if you make it in!
