About Erica Lee Martin
I like to say I'm a songwriter of the silly and the serious. My lyrics can be funny but also heartbreaking, my beats are catchy and so are the tunes. Plus I was an opera singer for 10 years so it's not surprising that melody is my #1 priority when writing. Now I write what are largely electronic pop songs using Garageband and I produce and release them on my own. I also make music videos to accompany them. These also range from the silly to the serious. If you don't believe me, check out my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMKsjfUa0rJGZexqdhIQWSA
I would like to be able to consistently release great new songs and music videos on a monthly or even biweekly basis. Right now a lot of my time is taken up by temping in office jobs and tutoring to pay the bills. Writing a song doesn't necessarily take a long time but producing it takes A LOT of time and effort. And, of course, money.
Music videos are an integral part of the music business and go a long way to selling your tracks to a new audience. I've had a blast conceptualising music videos which tell the visual part of the songwriting story; but making them can be costly, even if you're as frugal as me. Right now most of my videos have been filmed in my flat or friends' flats. I even turned my living room into a makeshift operating room for my RBF video.
With an actual budget we could use different locations, get better costumes and better equipment. I'd also be able to market my material properly and gain more exposure. And most importantly, I'd be able to compensate my creative partners for their work which is so so important in an industry that often pays creatives in "exposure bucks".
It's amazing that music is readily available for anyone with an internet connection. It allows people to listen to their favourite songs whenever they need to, and it allows me as a creator to upload new tracks whenever I want. However, most music platforms don't pay the artists as well as they should. Spotify currently pays musicians roughly $0.006 per stream. So if I wanted to make just $1000 from Spotify, I'd need to have at least 150,000 streams. To make a real income that number would need to grow significantly.
Patreon is a great way for fans to contribute to an artist they admire without a contract or a monthly subscription. You pledge what you want and you can change that amount at any time. In turn, it allows the artist to connect directly with fans and actively work to make material for these generous patrons. I'm asking for small pledges per creation which in my case means per song or per music video. As a starting point, I'd love to be able to put out one whole album's worth of songs + 5 music videos a year. And with your help, it could really happen!
