About The Errant Stage

The Errant Stage is a new mobile performance venue in a big red converted van!
This off-grid travelling space is the passion project of Kate Powell and Jonna Nummela, aiming to make performing arts more about creative community than competitive industry.Arts funding continues to be cut and the climate of the creative industry is constantly changing, so we need to change with it. The Errant Stage is fuelled by the belief that the arts and performance are essential to our human connections with each other and the world around us. We hope that through our work we can encourage community, communication, connection and empathy.
In support of those who are struggling against the odds to create work that is going unfunded across the U.K. and the rest of the world, The Errant Stage will be your venue, your platform, travelling with you, searching for that next adventure. We offer a professional platform for companies, communities and creatives to share all types of performance and expression in front of an audience, whilst enabling that audience to be anyone, anywhere.

Your Support

In September 2017 we ran an Indiegogo Flexible Funding campaign to enable the renovation  of The Errant Stage van, and we are now happy to say we are solar powered and on the road!

With your ongoing support we are able to look after the engine of our lovely 2006 IVECO, and we can subsidise performances and fees, meaning that we can continue to provide free events across the country.

Affordable. Accessible. Sustainable.

Rather than fighting with the bigwigs of the arts in their big buildings, through The Errant Stage we’re going to change things. We have curated our own little building, put it on four wheels and are taking it to artists and audiences to start conversations.
We believe theatre and the arts is more than just an industry; it is a community. A community that we want to continue growing, to keep putting new work in front of new audiences. A community that is fuelled by passion and belief that the arts and performance are essential to our human connections with each other and the world around us; The Errant Stage is our contribution to that.
The team behind this initiative are trained, professional creative facilitators and artists with an impressive track record of successful community projects in the UK and abroad, but above all we’re friends with a vision and passion to change the competitive rules of the creative industry. We see The Errant Stage as a long-term project that will be grown and shaped by the community who wants to make it their own.
Our motto is:
Affordable for Artists, Accessible for Audiences, Sustainable for the Future.

Community not Industry

As well as a stage, The Errant is a van. This has already created various technical and financial challenges for the team to overcome, and we have no doubt this will happen again in the future. However, as the project grows so does our skill set to deal with these challenges. As resourceful freelancers we have practised problem solving many of times as well as created wide networks of practitioners willing to share their time and skills in order to support the project to keep the van on the road.

The Errant Stage is our vision for the future of the performing arts - a future of adventure, empathy and community instead of routine, egoism and competitive industry. This project is our commitment to the creative process of exploration and celebration of failure, learning from one another by creating together.
