Every Frame a Painting is an online series of video essays about film form.

Film form is the way pictures and sound work together to create meaning. If you think of film as a language, this is the vocabulary and grammar. Composition, lighting, editing, color, silence, movement, and music are all aspects of form. There's a weird perception that this stuff is boring, but it's honestly pretty fun.

Whether you know it or not, you are actually fluent in the language of film. This channel is about helping you (and me) become more literate.

My name is Tony Zhou. I am a filmmaker and freelance editor based in San Francisco.

I make video essays that run from 3 to 9 minutes. Each one focuses on one filmmaker or one aspect of film form. So far I've tackled topics as diverse as Akira Kurosawa's use of movementSatoshi Kon's unique editing style, and how movies depict texting and the internet.

Generally speaking, I don't like ads and I don't like putting work behind a paywall. So I believe the best solution is to make the videos free, without ads, and then to offer benefits to Patreon subscribers.

My goal is to make the essays the starting point for interesting discussions or ideas. After each essay comes out, I receive tons and tons of new examples and research. I'm trying to keep them all in one place, so even after the essays are done, there's more information to explore.

About every three weeks, but it's very irregular. I don't have a set template; I just let the research take me where it wants to.

As a result, each video takes 2-8 weeks to research and anywhere from 20 to 70 hours to edit. Generally speaking, the long 8-minute videos can take over a month, so I try to release short videos to cover the gaps.

You are the only reason I can consider this. The channel is supported entirely by Patreon.

Every dollar you give goes into making the essay series a better resource. Annotated videos, educational versions (without swearing or nudity) and downloadable links for everything. I want to make this channel a place where we can all learn to become better filmmakers or film viewers.
