Hi, we're ALICE IN DISSONANCE, creators of the "fault" milestone series. Thank you for visiting our Patreon page.

Who are we?

ALICE IN DISSONANCE (AiD) is a Japanese doujin circle formed in 2011. It is comprised of 2 core members: the founder, writer and director, Munisix, and an in-house art director, Hare Konatsu, our off site programmer Akakyoryu, and our editor Ichiro Sumitani.

Thanks to everyone who's purchased fault milestone one! You guys have made it possible for us to pursue fault as our full time jobs and for that we can't thank you enough.

Okay, so now that's over with, what's going on here?

Simply put, we're asking for money to put into the production of "fault." We want to put every single dollar we can from this Patreon towards creating the next fault iteration. More backgrounds, animations, music, sound effects, and maybe if we make enough: voice actors. Although that goal may be far off, it's something we want to aim for.

Now, I'm sure you're asking, "But you had no problems making games before this, what gives?" In all honesty, as long as the fault series sells the way it has been on Steam, we can definitely keep our production going. But we want to try something different. We want to keep raising the production value, expand fault's universe, and release more content within a shorter timespan. It's just in order to do that, we need more staff. Starting from milestone two, we've introduced a 3D camera system into the Ren'Py game engine for a more cinematic experience (more on this below), and while it adds a lot to the dynamic of storytelling, the labor that goes into each scene has grown exponentially. Although it's nearly too much for us to handle, we're going to keep using it to tell fault's story the best way that we can.

With that in mind, a lot of our production can be streamlined if we had more people to work on the project. Unfortunately, we don't have the money to do so, which is where this Patreon comes in. Just to be clear, even if this Patreon fails, we're still going to be continuing with the fault series until the story is complete, or the director's Memory Mana is returned to the Manastream through exhaustion. This is just a way for our fans to involve themselves into our production and help make fault into something much grander than the four of us can do by ourselves.

Funding will also go into improving the overall quality of many elements of the art:

What is a Cinematic Novel?

A lot of what we're trying to do with fault's setting is as a proof of concept of the Cinematic Novel. What is a Cinematic Novel, you ask? If you're familiar with the idea of a Visual Novel, then the Cinematic Novel is exactly what it sounds like. It's a type of visual novel that borrows story telling techniques from films, breaking free from the static nature of many visual novels out there, and adding depth and motion to a scene to create a more dynamic emotional response. We feel that in many visual novels, the art is only there to complement the story, so what we aim for is that very art to take the visual lead.

By creating a 3D space and introducing a camera in said set, we are able to utilize a huge array of storytelling techniques that films have perfected over the last century. Focusing on character facial expressions, narrating through camera movements and shot compositions, and making use of extreme close ups are all techniques used to convey a different type of emotion and we can do it with a very limited number of assets. While it may seem trivial on paper, we want to be able to use these techniques to tell the story of fault and illustrate its world to the best of our ability. More info on this in the future!
