About

About FbTC

The mission of Flashback Theater Co. is to explore our present relationship to the world through the lens of our past interactions as a community and through the passionate pursuit of theater that speaks to the soul. Our season of theater events includes full productions, special events, and educational workshops. Each offers insight to our mission of exploring the world, our past, and theater.

We are the first semi-professional producing theater company in the area, meaning we compensate our performers. It is our vision to have a professional ensemble company in 5 years, with the goal of hiring 4 local theater artists full time. They would serve as staff that fulfill basic business operations AND as production members that act in, design for, or direct our productions.

Productions

Our productions tell the story of our community and our world. To tell the stories of our community, we look for plays that are set in our region or in Kentucky, and are relevant to the people here. Past productions include stories set in Kentucky and about Kentucky characters, such as And the Tide Shall Cover the Earth, Last Train to Nibroc, and Rosies: The Women Who Riveted the Nation.

Each production receives 3-4 weeks of rehearsal, meaning actors rehearse between 60-80 hours for each show. A production's budget ranges from $5,000 - $9,000, depending on the venue and design requirements, and includes payment for the venue, actors, sets, costumes, and marketing materials. The production team will begin working on music, set, costume, and lighting designs as early as eight months in advance.

Let's Play! Educational Series

Let's Play! is the education and outreach arm of Flashback. Its intent is to provide a safe space to explore theater. That can take place in several ways, including Second Saturday workshops, masterclasses, and outreach events. It is a learning environment and everyone should feel welcome to participate.
Let’s Play! has three main purposes:
  1. Provide a training ground for local theater artists.
  2. Build a passion for theater to sustain the future of our local arts scene.
  3. Build goodwill in the community for FbTC through outreach events.

Current Challenges

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, we were at the end of our 2019-20 season. During the quarantine period, we produced a series of online short plays, submitted by local playwrights as part of the QuaranTens series, and had to move our final production of the season to an open air venue, with a postponed schedule.

Gratefully, our landlord worked with us throughout the quarantine period and that has made it possible for us to survive! However, as business gets back to usual, we see that our regular production schedule of holding shows in our small black box space needs to be re-envisioned.

Some of the questions we have been faced with are: How long will social distancing be required? When will audiences be comfortable in our space again? What steps do we need to take to keep our artists and audiences safe? How do these changes affect our long term plans and production schedules?

2021 Season Updates

As we see the results of the pandemic play out, it was important to us to find a way to continue to engage you, our audience, with our work.

Our mission is to explore our present relationship to the world through the lens of our past interactions as a community through the passionate pursuit of theater that speaks to the soul.

Now, more than ever, we believe that mission must be upheld.

We asked our artists what they can offer you throughout this season via digital formats - and they have responded with many creative ideas!
  • Local short form plays will be sourced, staged, and recorded. These will be published exclusively for our Patreon supporters.
  • A podcast with Producing Artistic Director, Sommer Schoch, will be produced and offer you the opportunity to hear from her directly on all things Flashback, as well as get in-depth interviews from other FbTC artists.
  • Episodic release of the 2018 hit production, Rosies: The Women Who Riveted the Nation by Amber Frangos. The archival film of our production will be split into scenes and annotated by the playwright for a special experience exclusive to our monthly supporters.
  • Project updates and behind the scenes information from FbTC artists’ ongoing projects, including Amber Frangos’ new musical adaptation of the story of Mary, Keifer Adkins character and spoken word development, and more!
  • Online masterclasses to teach specific skills and techniques will be unlocked as we achieve our support goals.
  • Live Q&A with Flashback artists will be offered on a quarterly basis as we achieve our support goals.
When you give to Flashback Theater, you are supporting the examination of our community through theater by all age groups. You can help us tell and share the stories of Pulaski County's history. At the same time, you are encouraging local performers to develop their talents so that we can more effectively tell our stories as we grow. By giving, you are ensuring our history is not forgotten and our performing arts community has the resources to thrive.
