About Firefly Walter

My name is Firefly. I am a songwriter and and troubadour.  I've been immersed in music from a young age, and for the past decade have been singing to, for, and with communities of people. I write and perform original songs that uplift and inspire.

The past few years has been an awakening into a desire to bring forth the music of my ancestors into my current songwriting.

I am currently studying the structure and technique of various song traditions of medieval Europe and integrating what I am learning into my original compositions.

Your patronage will allow me to weave this rich and ancient tradition into my offerings as a song writer.

1) I have been studying for over a year now with my Bay Area based teacher Shira Kammen
2) I am planning the first of what will hopefully be many trips to Europe to attend immersive courses in Early Music
3) Record, produce and release an album that will be a mix of traditional songs from the medieval period (c. 1100 - 1400 's, pre-Renaissance) as well as original compositions influenced and inspired by the modal music from that period.

Some nuts and bolts of my music background:

* I grew up in a musical family and was surrounded by a multitude of instruments and musical styles from birth, including classical, folk, and jazz.

* I played classical clarinet in school band from 1997 - 2005.

* I took voice lessons focusing mainly on American folk traditions from 2004 - 2005.

* I received guitar and songwriting mentorship from master guitar player and spiritual giant Erika Luckett in 2011 and 2013.

* From 2003 - 2016 I performed at dozens of churches and Centers for Spiritual Living all around the US as a Sunday service guest musician.

* I taught myself acoustic guitar in 2002 and have been playing professionally since 2011.

* I wrote my first song on guitar in 2009 and released my first EP Faith Frequency, all containing original songs, in 2013.

* Starting in 2012 I began traveling around the US and collecting folk songs intersecting in the following community movements:
  ~ Rainbow Gathering
  ~ Medicine / Ceremony Songs
  ~ New Thought / Spiritual / Nondenominational / New Age

I have shared these songs everywhere from being a music director at multi day retreats and seminars to intimate house concerts and around campfires.

* In 2013 I performed with pagan-folk band Wyrd

* From 2011 - 2013 I regularly led group singing for The Launching Pad, a spiritual community in Berkeley. In 2014 I started a Launching Pad in Ashland, Oregon and regularly shared music there as well as around various venues in the Southern Oregon conscious music scene.

* In 2017 I joined the transcendental indie-folk band The Seventh String, playing guitar and backup vocals for their debut studio album Off to Starboard.

What am I up to now?

I sing to inspire people and give them hope for the world. Music can be used to build bridges.

1) I am performing and touring with The Seventh String, bringing original and traditional music forth for community building and culture change

2) Performing my original music in local community productions in collaboration with other independent musicians.

3) Studying medieval music and history intensely. Specifically  I am studying the history of language, migration periods, wars and crowns, as a way to best understand the context in which this music emerged. There are many surviving manuscripts with early music notation as well as a host of information available via the internet. I am diving in deep.

Lyrical Troubadour?

The Troubadours are one known group of traveling musicians who entertained the royals in court. But in different regions they had different names. Trouveres in northern France. Minnesangers in Germany. Trobairitz were the names of female composers of Occitan (less common but definitely real!) Drawing upon this evocative word, I tap into the tradition of traveling and sharing music with the communities I encounter.

I am lyrical because words are my power. I have always been a writer. Ever since I was 4 years old I knew I was meant to share words with the world.

Thank you for taking this journey with me!

If you become my patron, you can expect:

* a lot of nerdy content posts about what I am learning

* updates and pictures/videos from my travels

* access to any songs I record

* sneak peaks at songs I am working on before they are released

At some point I will work on more specific offerings. At this point, I welcome your thoughts and engagement with what I am posting!

Medieval Music Musings ~ I will regularly publish writing that is a synthesis of my own research, study, and insight. This will be an intersection of medieval music, modern music, spirituality, philosophy, philology, and whatever else I may find interesting. Hopefully with the support and feedback from patrons, I will be able to select pieces to submit for publication on various digital platforms.
