Milestone Goals
Just Made It!
We can keep going, but we will need to reach our further milestones to pay our contributors, artists, and staff what they deserve.
Pay The Artist
At this milestone, we will have a dedicated fund for cover artists.
Set Us Free
If we can reach and sustain this goal, future issues of Five out of Ten will be available for free as PDF, ePub and on our website! We can pay our writers and artists a decent wage.
Six out of Ten
We'll publish an extra contributor in every issue - that's six instead of five.
The Vault
We'll make the entire Five out of Ten back catalogue available to read for free: over one hundred features from our three year history!
Seven out of Ten
We'll take on another contributor in every issue, which means our name makes even less sense, but it's better for everyone.
Orbital Space Station
The Five out of Ten will relocate to a space station shaped like Zool, the Ninja from the Nth Dimension. More realistically, anything above $3500 will be used on external designers, video and audio producers. We're here to share in the success of our contributors, not get rich off their work.

Five out of Ten is a magazine for people who love videogames and demand the best in independent writing. Founded in 2012, we wanted to create a zine that was truly different, inclusive, and fair to its writers. We want to be the New Yorker of games journalism and criticism: no reviews, no reheated press releases, just the best in long-form features.
We've published unique, exceptional writing in our first two years: a trip to the last rhythm game tournament in the world; a decade-long battle with an impossible strategy game; an insight into what Hitman can teach us about 'going stealth'; a reflection on being lost in a JRPG dungeon, in an article that was itself a hand-drawn maze. Our past contributors include Leigh Alexander, Samantha Allen, Becky Chambers, Christian Donlan, Brendan Keogh, Cameron Kunzelman, Helen Lewis, Kris Ligman, Maddy Myers, Elizabeth Simins, and Zoya Street, and we hope to feature more voices - old and new - in the years to come.
Traditional publishing is weighted towards the publisher, at the expense of a magazine's contributors. There's a better way than this: we want to pay our writers as much as we can, while ensuring they retain copyright over their work.
Now we want everyone to enjoy our magazine - even those who can't afford it. Help us set Five out of Ten free!

We founded Five out of Ten on the principle that videogame culture was worth writing about, and good writing was worth paying for. But what if we could pay our writers and let everyone enjoy the magazine, even if they lack the means to pay for it? Wouldn't that be even better? As a small magazine, we could never support ourselves through advertising alone. That means we need wonderful people like you to support our work.
With your help, we can reach our fundraising target and create a sustainable income for our talented writers and artists. At first, Patreon backers will get a free download of every new issue, but we hope that soon everyone will be able to enjoy Five out of Ten for free, regardless of patronage.
Five out of Ten backers are supporting the magazine, not subscribing to it. Our goal is actually to eliminate backer rewards by giving everyone the magazine for free. So please back us with whatever money you can afford, rather than the rewards you want!
$2000 may sound like a lot of money - because it is - and we want to be transparent about where your money is going. The figures break down as follows:
55% - contributors
5% - cover artist
20% - editors (5% x 4)
10% - site hosting and development
10% - Patreon and Paypal fees
It's important to understand that we are paying our contributors a cut of each issue's earnings, not a set wage. We've worked this way from day one: it's honest and fair. The more we can raise, the more will go directly to our writers. Anything you can pledge to us will help!

Background
We've been working on Five out of Ten for almost three years, from the comforts of our respective bedrooms. We love making every issue, and we think that love comes across on every page. But it is difficult to sell digital magazines in an era when most writing is available for free: it's hard for you to share your favourite articles, and it's hard for us to make something that only a few people can read. We spend a lot of time marketing, when we'd much rather be making. We founded Five out of Ten on the principle that videogame culture was worth writing about, and good writing was worth paying for. What's the Goal?
Our goal is to make Five out of Ten sustainable by reaching a target of $2000 per issue.
