About Flickering Lamps

Hi there,

Thank you for visiting the Patreon page for Flickering Lamps!  My name is Caroline Swan and I'm a London-based historian and writer who provides all of the blog's content.  Flickering Lamps was founded in 2014 to provide meticulously-researched, but entertaining and accessible, histories of the places around us - in particular, ruins, historic buildings, graveyards and the sites of strange or significant events.  Some of these places are in well-known parts of London, while others are more obscure.

Although many of the sites and stories featured on Flickering Lamps have, on the surface, a rather dark or macabre theme, a deeper look into the history of these places often uncovers surprising or poignant stories.  Conversely, some rather innocuous-looking places featured on the blog sometimes have quite shocking and grim histories.  I carefully research each article, and always visit featured sites to take photographs which I then use to illustrate the blog.

Why become a patron?
This Patreon has been set up to help with the costs of running Flickering Lamps - in particular its web hosting and storage.  Those who sign up as a patron will pay a small amount per article published to support; in the event of a blog hiatus, patrons will not be charged.  New articles will generally be posted every two to three weeks.

As a way of saying "thank you" to those supporting me on Patreon, I will be publishing Patron-exclusive 'extras' on my Patreon blog - these will include additional photographs, and 'bite-sized' posts about interesting places and people I've come across on my research trips that somehow didn't quite fit into any of the articles I publish on Flickering Lamps, plus some 'behind the scenes' content, sneak previews of upcoming articles and tips and guides for visiting and interpreting historic cemeteries, churches and ruins.

Thank you for visiting my Patreon page!
60% complete
When Flickering Lamps reaches its first milestone of ten patrons, I'll be opening up a Q&A to all my social media followers, and will answer as many questions as possible about history, writing, photography and the places I've visited whilst researching the articles featured on Flickering Lamps.
