About Fonda Lee

Who Am I?

If you’re reading this, you probably already know who I am, but just in case you’ve stumbled here inadvertantly and are intrigued enough to read on: Hello! I’m Fonda Lee and I write fantasy and science fiction stories. I’m the author of the epic modern fantasy Green Bone Saga, which starts with Jade City, continues in Jade War, and concludes this year with Jade Legacy. I’m also the author of the young adult science fiction duology, Exo and Cross Fire, a standalone novel, Zeroboxer, and a smattering of short stories and comics. I’ve won the World Fantasy Award, the Aurora Award three times and been nominated for the Nebula, the Andre Norton, the Locus, the Ignyte and others. I love my job and hope that I’ll get to keep doing it.

Why Patreon, and Why Now?

For years, I’ve watched fellow authors set up Patreons and thought, “That sounds like a great idea, but I could never do it.” A monthly commitment to produce content scared the bejeesus out of me. I’m one of those writers who needs to work alone in the early stages, so the idea of tossing out half-baked ideas or first drafts gives me hives. And writing blog posts uses up the word-making juice in my brain that I need to be channeling into my novels. So even though I really liked the idea of a Patreon, the actual logistical reality of it didn’t seem like it was for me.

Until now. After working on the Green Bone Saga for over six years, I’ve become so invested in the story and the characters that while writing Jade Legacy, I ended up creating even more content. Perhaps a part of me simply wanted to stay in this world a little longer. I wrote 22,000 words of short fiction set before the events of Jade City. I have detailed background notes about Kekon and the Green Bone clans. I joked online about writing a Lonely Planet-style travel guide to Janloon, except it's not really a joke. I'd happily talk more about all the little details in the books that no interviewer is probably ever going to notice or ask me about.

Suddenly, the idea of a space where I could share all that with readers was very appealing.

I’m a full-time writer and there's nothing else I'd rather do for a living, but any author will tell you this isn’t a financially stable profession. For me, the pandemic has meant that teaching and speaking fees have fallen at a time when I also haven’t been selling new work because I’ve spent the last two years focused on completing this trilogy to the very best of my ability. This Patreon will hopefully be a way to accomplish a few things: provide a small stream of supplemental income to help me through this period, release more Green Bone Saga stories and content to readers quickly and easily, and create a channel for me to interact with all of you and for you to interact with each other in a more close-knit setting than social media.

This Is Going To Be A Bit Different

I’m planning to run this Patreon for one year, until August 2022.

As a $4/month patron, you’ll receive a year’s worth of Green Bone Saga short fiction, bonus content, and author insights for the three months prior and the nine months after the trilogy is complete on November 30 (US) or December 1 (UK/Aus). At $6/month, I'll also answer your questions in monthly video Q&As and you'll receive an ebook copy of the collected short fiction. At all levels, you'll have access to the private Twice Lucky chat room where you can leave me questions, talk to each other, and have people to react with you when you reach that part of Jade Legacy. And that other part. And that last part, too.

Think of it like this: if the book release were a rock concert, this Patreon is the pre-event VIP backstage pass and tickets to the after-party. Since it’s only going to last a year, depending on how much of the festivities you want to attend, you'll pay $24 to $72.

At the end of the year, I’ll either retire this space or put it on hiatus. If there’s enough demand, I might restructure it to offer a single tier for those who want to continue to support me even when I’m not actively offering as much regular content. Either way, you’ll be notified in advance, and there’s no expectation to subscribe indefinitely. My goal is for this Patreon to be a simple, fun, engaging, and celebratory experience for me and my supporters. I’m setting the tiers at the lowest level I reasonably can, because I want as many people as possible to be able to join.

Is There Any Other Way to Get the Short Stories?

Originally, I'd intended to post the Green Bone Saga short stories on my Curious Fictions page, on a pay-per-story model, but with the recent announcement that the site would be closing this month, that's sadly no longer an option.

So my new plan is to collect the short fiction together and self-publish them as an e-book in the near future. Funds from the Patreon will go toward paying for copyediting, formatting, and a cover. (Remember, you’ll get the book automatically if you’re a $6/month patron.)

So yes, even if you’re not a patron, there will eventually be a way to read the short stories, but you’ll likely have to wait until sometime in early 2022 when I get around to putting the ebook up on retail sites. Patrons will get them first, starting this month.

Anything Else?

The focus won’t be just the Green Bone Saga. I’ll talk about and answer questions regarding my other books, future projects I’m working on, the craft of writing, the business of publishing, books I'm reading, movies and anime that I’m watching, and anything else we feel like.

Since I’m planning for this to be a temporary backstage hangout for supporters and readers, the focus won’t be on updates or marketing; signing up for my author newsletter is still the best place to make sure you hear about book giveaways, contests, and upcoming events.

That’s it! I don’t know anyone else who’s set up a Patreon in this way before, but it’s what felt right for me. I'm nervous and excited. This is a bit of an experiment—one that I’m eager to dive into. So, let’s go. My blood for the clan!
