Hi! I’m Karin, and my blog is Free Wheelin'. I chronicle my experiences living and traveling with a disability to inspire others to never give up on their dreams. No matter what you've been through, you CAN still get out there and enjoy life. Whether I'm exploring a big city, finding solace in nature, or just sharing my day-to-day experiences, I hope you'll join me on the journey.

My Story

I'm a writer and advocate who has cerebral palsy. Doctors told my parents that I’d never walk, speak, or feed myself, and that I’d have mental disabilities. My parents refused to accept that – they fought for me to have equal rights in education and in life. Thanks to their support and my own determination, I have my BA in English from Stanford, MA in Psychology from Antioch, and I work -- as Disability Editor at The Mighty and as a travel blogger.

I've always loved to travel, and it's been an essential part of building my confidence and advocacy skills. To me, travel isn't about taking a vacation, it's about experiencing new cultures, meeting fascinating people, and showing how much people with disabilities can accomplish. I want all people with disabilities to have these kinds of opportunities, so I share travel tips and review accessible and not-so-accessible destinations all over North America. I also write about important issues facing the disability community, such as employment, health care, and representation in TV and movies.

When I'm not working or traveling, I enjoy spending time with my four beautiful dogs, attending theatre and live music events, and shopping for vintage home decor.

Why I Started a Patreon

I've achieved a lot in life, but I've also faced significant challenges. I survived a 6-year abusive relationship and was left decimated emotionally and financially. I had just rebuilt my self-esteem when I was the victim of a violent home invasion attack, followed by death threats which forced me to move for my own safety. Although the perpetrators were eventually brought to justice, I was left in debt and stuck in a place where I don't want to live.

I wish I had started a crowdfunding campaign after the attack, but I hate asking people for money. I especially hate asking for something for nothing. But I'm determined to rebuild my life. And I realized I do have something I can offer -- my writing. I've had people ask me how they can support my blog and my travels, and now I've set up a way you can do so.

Goals

I have a job I enjoy and I work hard to cover my day-to-day expenses, but it's not enough to meet other upcoming needs. I'm in need of a new accessible van as mine is 15 years old and run down. I'm also trying to move to a city with more cultural and professional opportunities. And I'm still massively in debt from my emergency move.

I want my Patreon to be financially accessible to as many people as possible, so I started monthly donations low, and I value any amount you can give.

Why You Should Support Me When There Are Starving Kids, Wars and Global Warming

Um. I really don’t know. That’s why asking for donations is hard. I want to help other people with disabilities see how much they can achieve. I want the world to see how much people with disabilities can achieve. Most people with disabilities are unemployed and unable to reach their full potential, not because they can’t work, but because society discriminates against them and doesn’t see their potential. As someone who has been successful despite extreme challenges, I feel it’s my responsibility to speak out and be an advocate. If I can help just one person with a disability or parent of a child with a disability feel hopeful about the future, then it’s all been worth it.

I hope my writing provides practical advice as well as the right kind of inspiration. I wish the world valued writers, musicians, and artists (along with teachers and caregivers) more and I hope to see a societal shift towards paying creative people what they’re worth. If I value myself and my work, I have to put myself out there and say hey, I think I’m doing something important, trying to make the world a better place in my small way. And if you think that’s worth something, I thank you for your patronage and I appreciate you more than you can possibly know.
