The Near-Apocalypse of '09 is a multi-year, episode-by-episode analysis and study of the DC Animated Universe, a 1992-2006 metaseries of six to eight (depending on how you count) cartoons, most with multiple seasons, and four movies. The goal is not to create a traditional guide or critical study, but rather a psychochronography; I am less interested in the sort of information that could be looked up on a wiki, and more interested in exploring the ideaspace within which the show functions: the ways in which it is a product of its times, its politics and philosophy, works and events which influenced it, and those which it influenced in turn.

As you can see, the project is quite ambitious, likely involving three or four times as much content, research, and time as the similar projects I've already completed (or will have completed by the time this project starts going live): The Very Soil (on Puella Magi Madoka Magica) and My Little Po-Mo (on My Little Pony).

The immediate purpose of this Patreon is to raise money for incidental expenses that come with any project of this sort: buying copies of the works I'm studying, mostly, not just the episodes (some of which, such as Justice League, are readily available; others, such as most of Static Shock, are not), but also of any supplementary materials I need to cover. For instance, I already know I'm going to need to watch some of Gargoyles, read some Static Shock comics, and research apocalyptic themes in pop culture of the Long 1990s. Some of that I may be able to find ways to do for free, for example at libraries, but some will cost money, and this Patreon will help pay for that. I also want to move from the free, get-what-you-pay-for blogging platform I've been using to my own domain; that too costs money for hosting.

In the longer term and more blue-sky... well, I have a full-time job, but many people in my field freelance. If I can start making enough money on a monthly basis through the Patreon and/or book sales to switch to part-time freelancing, that frees up more time to work on Near-Apocalypse, which means new entries come out faster. This second goal is what my milestones are about.

Vlog Commission!
$15 or more per month 4 patrons (sold out!)
You get to choose a single animated work (movie or single episode of a show) for me to review in an upcoming vlog. I reserve the right to refuse to watch something (for example, if I find the subject matter particularly abhorrent, I have already reviewed it, or it is episode 57 when I'm only on episode 20 and trying to avoid spoilers), in which case I will ask you to pick something else.

In addition, you receive the benefits of the $1, $2, and $5 levels.

Special: Pledge an extra $5 ($20 total) to get the benefits of the $10 tier as well!

Near-Apocalypse Commission!
$30 or more per month 2 of 3 patrons
You get to choose a single topic related to the DC Animated Universe but not actually part of it, such as a historical event that occurred during the period I'm currently looking at, a work which influenced or is influenced by the DCAU, a related work such as the spinoff comics or another superhero cartoon from the same time period, etc. I will then write a Near-Apocalypse of '09 entry about your topic. I reserve the right to reject a topic (for example, if I don't believe I can get 1200-2000 words out of it, it's out of the scope of the project, or too obscure for me to be able to get the information I need), in which case I will ask you to pick something else.

In addition, you receive the benefits of the $1, $2, and $5 levels.

Special: Pledge an extra $5 ($35 total) to get the benefits of the $10 tier as well!

Goals
$187 of $300 per month
I post another extra monthly vlog, in addition to the usual weekly ones and the ones for the $100 and $150 goals.
