About GALPAL PRODUCTIONS

The gist of who we are!
We are the Gal Pals, Corynne & Raine, two dancers who met as starry-eyed young adults at the dance program at the University of Calgary in 2011. After both moving to Toronto at different times and without really knowing the other was here we were quickly reunited by working in a bar together. After many a late-night chat over polishing glassware, we quickly realized that we had similar aspirations, and in 2017 Gal Pal Productions was born!

We shared a desire to create work that not only fed our creative souls but brought in the people and community around us. We wanted to make our friends our colleagues, our people feel connected, together, and like the vital lifeblood of Toronto that they truly are. Less than six months later on April 3rd, 2018, ‘Being an Artists is F**king Killing Me’ launched its first two episodes. From that moment on we have been working together on an almost daily basis.

About ‘Being an Artist is F**king Killing Me’ - the Podcast
A podcast made by artists, for every listener.

The podcast came out of a need to have REAL conversations with our peers and others in the arts field. We were tired of getting the same questions and hearing the same things over and over. ‘What are you working on?’ ‘Who are you working with?’ ‘Are you working?’ We were tired of the superficial conversations that were only asking about what contract or potential contract (or lack thereof) was coming our way. Couldn’t we just talk about what was actually going on?
We get into the nitty-gritty. Funding, or the lack thereof, the lack of mental health resources, the lack of accessibility, trying to maintain relationships, being so invested in your craft that you can’t possibly see a way out but wanting one, trying to wear a thousand hats, wanting to quit... The list goes on and on, we talk about it all.

We saw a gap and immediately filled it. We release an interview with a new artist every Tuesday on almost every streaming and podcast platform. From dancers to actors, tattoo artists to jewelry designers, painters to interdisciplinary artists, we stay down to earth and vulnerable with our guests while still making an incredibly witty and entertaining podcast that almost everyone can relate to. We have been lucky enough to interview artists such as Emmy winning director of Schitt's Creek, Andrew Cividino, Ted Talk community contributor and international performer, Esie Mensah, Broken Social Scene lead singer, Lisa Lobsinger, and many more influential artists.

Real conversations. Real Artists.

Already in its fourth season with over 80 episodes under its belt, Being An Artist is F**king Killing Me is always growing and looking for artists to join in on the conversation.

Why you should support ‘Being an Artist is F**king Killing Me’
Since the inception of ‘Being an Artist is F**king Killing Me’ we have realized that these types of honest, unfiltered and unedited conversations are not only needed by artists but everyone. The topics that continuously arise from our recording sessions are both needed and vital in how people connect to each other beyond the superficial pleasantries.

Our main goal is to keep this podcast free, forever. Our second goal is to give as many people a place to freely express their concerns and qualms about the industry as possible. We believe that by listening to more and more people who are different and have different experiences from us we will be able to learn more, adapt and make our community a better place for everyone, creators, patrons and supporters of the arts alike.

Thirdly, we want to constantly make the podcast better and better. We want to grow the podcast, reach a wider audience, to connect with other creators and artists and be able to offer as many viewpoints and conversations to our audience as possible.

As the saying goes, it takes a village and we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without our listeners, family, friends, colleagues and community. Help us continue to make these candid conversations accessible to all. Help us dive deeper to get past the bullshit and offer something real.

“This is definitely a podcast like no other. It takes a very specific artistic community in Toronto and sheds light on some of the issues we’re facing.”
