The Illustrated Book Club

I'm a professional illustrator (among other things) with a passion for reading.

The idea of The Illustrated Book Club is simple. I choose a book from a list of possible titles (including suggestions by you), then I design a cover while we all read it. Then we start again with the next title.

How Do I Take Part?

There are different levels:

  • READ ALONG: Simply look for updates (here, Goodreads, or on Facebook). If you don't have the physical book, there'll be links to free ebooks/online texts.
  • SUGGEST TITLES: Support me on Patreon (min. $2). When there's enough support, I'll introduce voting (see the goals on the left).
  • SEE FINISHED DESIGNS: All finished book covers are posted publicly for free (see examples below), and designs are available as prints and merchandise through Redbubble and Society6.

Why Should I Support You?

I'm a full-time illustrator and writer, so your money buys time off from my other work to produce the designs. Patreon supporters also get other rewards - discount on art sales and commissions, postcards, to see work in development and get insights into my technical process, to ask me questions, and so on. There's even a loyalty reward for long-term patrons. For more info, see the rewards on the right.

For more information on Patreon and how it works, see the information at the bottom of the page (below the example book covers). If you know about Patreon already, you can skip this.

The current book is Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë - designs coming soon.

How Does This Work?

In case you don't know, Patreon is a crowdfunding platform, a bit like Kickstarter, but instead of pledging to support individual projects (which may or may not get made), you support creators whatever they do. In my case, if enough people make small gestures of support (which can be as little as around $1 per month - or whatever that is in GB pounds or Euros - see here for current exchange rates), I'll be freed up from mundane, bill-paying work to devote my time to The Illustrated Book Club. Money is collected at the end of the month, but the arrangement is flexible - you can cancel or alter your pledge at any time - and there are different levels of support that entitle patrons to exclusive rewards (listed on the right), and you can upgrade/downgrade at any time.

At the moment, I'm asking for pledges PER FINISHED ARTWORK - usually, two per book: the finished traditional part (the artwork) and the Photoshopped bit (the design - like the examples above). I charge per work, as opposed to monthly, because you only pay for what I upload - if I'm busy with my day job, that might be nothing, so you pay nothing. On the other hand, if I'm very productive, and I upload a lot, you can still cap your pledge at a total number of times you're comfortable with (once, twice, etc) so that you don't pay more than you want to. Generally, there are two paid posts per book (both public, for everyone to see), and we cover one or two books per month. However, not all posts are paid posts, and as a patron you'll get exclusive access to all this free stuff (which non-patrons won't). If you don't want to commit to a monthly amount, you can even make a one-off or occaional pledge of support by simply cancelling after one or two months, and you can stop and restart things as often as you like - it's all flexible, and as everything is done through Paypal, it's also perfectly safe.

You can find out more about me and see more of my work on my website. If you have any questions about anything (e.g. about how it works, suggestions for rewards not listed - whatever), then please contact me through this page, Twitter or my website.

Thank you!

Gareth Southwell.
