About Gareth Southwell

I'm a philosopher, writer and illustrator from Wales, UK. Most of what I do relates to books – writing them (fiction and non-fiction), designing the covers and providing illustrations. Mostly, I earn a living from professional commissions from publishers and authors, which doesn't allow me much time to pursue my own ideas. A small monthly pledge supports me by buying time to work on (I think) more interesting, but perhaps less commercial projects. You can choose which of these activities you want to support and hear about, and you can stop, change or restart your support at any time. In return, you get various rewards and benefits.

Now, a little bit more about each of these things...

Philosophy

I've written 11 books of popular philosophy (i.e. aimed at the general reader) for various well-known publishers (Quercus, Quarto, Hachette), and which have been sold all over the world and translated into numerous languages (including Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, Bulgarian, Korean, Spanish, Italian, and Dutch, apparently). I've written on numerous topics, ranging from general introductions, to overviews of specific subjects (philosophy of science, political philosophy), to guides to individual philosophers (Descartes, Nietzsche, Plato, Aristotle). I'm also a former teacher and examiner, and I have a PhD on the philosophical controversies surrounding the definition of death – just in case you ever need cheering up.

Patreon support lets me follow my philosophical interests and write whatever I like without wondering whether publishers will consider it commercially viable. I'm particularly interested in philosophy of mind, consciousness, artificial intelligence, science and technology, the internet and social media, religion and spirituality, aesthetics, transhumanism, psychology and psychoanalysis, the world of work, the Luddites, and the philosophy of Nietzsche. But mainly I'm interested in how philosophy can better help us to understand and live our lives, and in discussing and communicating this in an accessible and engaging way – and if that means caricatures of famous philosophers as dogs, then so be it. Current and future possible projects include an introduction to ethics, the concept of luck, and a philosopher's guide to Hell.

Writing

I also write "speculative" fiction, which is really just a more literary way of saying "science fiction and fantasy", and other weird stuff that doesn't quite fit. To date, I've self-published a near-future sci-fi novel and a novella, and I am currently working on two other fiction projects. Naturally, there is some overlap between my fiction and philosophy, and I find stories to be a great way of exploring philosophical themes and ideas. Your support here is vital, as it buys time for me to write and research. I also like to chat about the craft of writing, so I use Patreon to share and discuss tips – on writing motivation, marketing and self-publishing, blurb doctoring, plotting, characterisation, etc – and to connect with other fledgling or professional writers.

Illustration

I'm a professional illustrator and book cover designer and I currently offer my services freelance and through Reedsy. My work has appeared in magazines and books all over the world, and for ten years I provided caricatures for The Philosophers' Magazine. Patron support here means that I can use my skills for creative good (rather than cynical money-grabbing evil), providing covers, illustrations and designs for my own books and writing. I'm happy to chat about my art in whatever context – technical aspects, drawing tips, inspiration, favourite artists, what makes good cover design – and I will also ask patron's opinions on work in progress, blurbs, covers, etc. My current project is an illustrated edition of my novel MUNKi (see progress here).

HOW IT ALL WORKS

You probably already know how Patreon works (if not, go here), but what it isn't is a begging bowl. Like many creatives, I give away a lot of my work freely or cheaply in order to promote myself, so at the very least your support is a little gesture of support for what I currently do. It also allows me to spend more time doing things I really want to, rather than what simply pays the bills.

In terms of pledge options, I'm going to try to keep things as simple as possible. There will be three "tiers": you can support me as (1) a philosopher, (2) a fiction writer, or (3) both. Since my illustration underpins most of my work, in one way or another, there isn't a separate tier for that, so you will see those things that are relevant to whichever tier you've chosen. Patrons are charged upfront at the beginning of each month, and you can stop, restart or alter your support at any time.

For your pledge, you'll get various rewards (see the information in the tiers section), but I don't want to overpromise, and it would defeat the object of Patreon if I spent all my time knitting bespoke "Thanks for being a patron!" hats. The point is to buy more time for me to do the things that interest you.

If you're not interested in tiers or rewards, and you just want to make a gesture of support, then go here and select "make a custom pledge" at the bottom. You can then enter the amount you want. If you don't want this to be monthly, then suspend it after the first payment has gone through.

And that's it! Thanks for stopping by. If you simply want to keep up to date with what I'm doing without pledging, then please check out the above links to my various websites (where you can sign up to my newsletters), or follow me on the Twitter.

Best wishes,

Gareth Southwell.
