About Geisha-kai

Hello! My name is Maria and, since 2011, I'm an owner of a blog about Japanese culture and geisha. I'm passionate about their culture and I've been studying it for over 15 years now.

It all started with a visit at the local Japanese museum. A lady, dressed in a stunning kimono, gave me a summer fan (uchiwa) as a souvenir. This fan had a lovely ukiyo-e drawing of a geisha. I was only 4 years old but this image hypnotized me back then. Later, I've started investigating this culture very carefully. I'm 27 now and I've published two academic dissertations about geisha already!

I'm also a publicist for the Polish media (i.e. Polska-Azja); focused on Japanese culture and society. I plan to write my own book about geisha specifically and visit Kyoto to study this world even closer. My dream is to continue my academic work in Japan, i.e. a Ph.D. You can help me out with realizing these goals here ^.^ Thank you!

Update: I'm in Kyoto! Let's study the world of traditional culture together on my website!

This is the amount I'll be able to spend on special mai (traditional Japanese dance) classes to better understand geiko san and maiko san. It would allow me to discover their everyday struggles as professional dancers and also to share some tips, tricks, and basic knowledge!
