I’m George Lepauw.

Welcome to my page!

I'm using Patreon to fulfill my deep-seated desire to be a classical musician for the 21st century. While the art form is not new, there are so many new ways to share this music and tradition that need to be used to expand its audience. What is most exciting to me is working with other artists and creative people, and leveraging new technologies like smart phones and virtual reality (VR), in order to bring a multidisciplinary approach to a tradition which has been isolating itself from contemporary trends for decades.

I have just launched a personally important musical and artistic journey, and I invite you to join me here to follow all of its twists and turns.

My goal is to make several albums of music I particularly love - Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Chopin's and Debussy's Preludes, Beethoven's Sonatas - but to do so with a new vision for what an album's function is. My idea is that an album is, by definition, a collection of pieces (music, photos, stamps, etc.), and there is nothing that specifies how those pieces should be organized and how small or how big, or even open-ended, the album must be. There are no rules, other than that an album is a collection of something. With that in mind, I want these albums to bring together many more pieces than simply what is recorded: visual art from many disciplines, film and virtual reality, theater and dance, literature and poetry. I want there to be an interactive element to engage audiences in new ways, and I want to create both a historical context for this music as well as a contemporary context that relates to the human experience of the 21st century. What will all this look like in the end? I have some ideas - dedicated websites for each album, mobile apps, and other digital means of getting the music across (including CDs for those who still want those) - but part of the task is to experiment with what works as I go, and as I encounter other artists and thinkers who can collectively contribute to the full realization of these projects.

I seek your support to realize this project!

Why?

First, patronage in the 21st century has become more powerful and democratic than ever, allowing anyone, even with a very small contribution, to make an impact, and that is an important development for the freedom of the artist, and the participation of more people in creative projects.

Second, this type of project does not fit into a traditional mold, and a typical record label would not be able to support this and allow me the freedom to create something out of the ordinary.

Third, this is a project which will take some time to come to fruition. Without support, I could not dedicate myself to this long-term project.

I want to bring you with me in an unparalleled journey through music, art, and the creative process. You will be able to learn about my process as a musician, and see how I think about, and feel, this music, with all the stories it evokes and inspires, as I prepare for, and then make, this series of recordings. You will have behind the scenes insights into the art but also the business of being a classical musician in the 21st century, seeing how I launch this kind of project and bring it to the public, with all its promise, and perils.

With your critical financial help, this unique album project will be much more than just another box set on a shelf, but rather a lively and novel way to showcase great music, providing uncommon insight into the minds and hearts of these composers and the artists involved on this journey, myself included. It is also important to me that Patreon helps me grow my community of friends and fans, of which I truly hope you will be a part.

Read on if you want to know even more about my thinking and background! Otherwise, feel free to subscribe to this project now.

I’ve always had a curious mind, and I’ve pursued a multi-faceted path of creative exploration and cultural activism my whole life. I love history, and I’ve always wanted to build upon tradition to innovate. I see my relationship to classical music, art history, and contemporary culture as intertwined, and throughout my career, I’ve shared my passions and my vision for art in this world with people of all ages and backgrounds. For me, art is humanity.

I’m excited to launch this Patreon page to seek your support. After years of primarily focusing on my cultural organizing and activism, I am itching to do more music and art, and I’ve got some really great projects on the table. The support I receive through Patreon is helping me make that transition, and is vital to the success of my creative projects!

To get started, I am embarking on the monumental task of recording, on the piano, the complete Well-Tempered Clavier of Johann Sebastian Bach, of which you can hear me play the Prelude and Fugue in C Major from Book One in the above video (at home on my very untempered/untuned piano). The Well-Tempered Clavier consists of a Prelude and Fugue in each major and minor key of the western scale, of which there are twenty-four. Because Bach tried this experiment twice, twenty years apart, there are two books of twenty-four Preludes and Fugues, each one brilliant in its own way, like the two testaments of the Bible, structurally similar, but holding different stories. Performing or even recording these is a rare phenomenon because of their technical difficulty and length. But predictably for me, I’m not interested in doing things the usual way: along with this planned audio recording, I am working with filmmakers to turn this music into at least two films, one dedicated only to the music and performance of the piece, and the other layered with a narrative to tell a story with the music as soundtrack. I've been experimenting with different ways of "telling" this music, such as I did when eight members of Chicago’s storied Hubbard Street Dance company joined me for a marathon 5 hour performance two years ago. The beautiful, powerful dancing, served to highlight and elevate the music. Using the medium of film is the natural progression of this recording and also an important step in generating interest for new generations of music lovers. This is a long-term project that will take time to unfold.

I have also finally launched my first Podcast! It was a long time brewing, but it's finally happened. Called "Through The Stage Door", it will be a reflection of my interests as a musician and human making my way through life, and will feature frequent interviews, as well as stories and opinion pieces. The first podcast was released in July 2016, featuring the YouTube star piano duo Anderson and Roe. Listen to it here on SoundCloud! There are five episodes online at this point, with a slate more coming in the next couple of months. I am very excited about this project too as it allows me to share some of my privileged encounters with artists of all kinds.

Patreon is a platform I really believe is changing the way art is made for the better, by essentially "subscribing" to the creator and providing reliable, regular support within your budget. One of the best things about Patreon is not only the financial support it provides but the real and ongoing conversation it allows between creators and patrons. Once you sign up, I encourage you to share your thoughts, ideas, and questions, freely with me throughout this process. Among other things I will provide to patrons, will be written posts about all aspects of my work, with more information on Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, my interpretive concepts for the music, progress reports on the recordings and films, more home videos of me playing music that I wouldn’t otherwise share with the general public, and even private Skype or in-person lessons for those of you who play piano too (check all support levels for the benefits that interest you most).

That covers the important stuff. If you want to know more about my background, keep reading! If you’re ready to commit, go ahead and select your patron level now. Lots of fun, insights, music and art will be delivered. Thank you, in advance, for any support you can provide and for participating in this ambitious artistic project. It means a whole lot to me.

Some notes on my background:

I started piano at the age of three in Paris where I grew up. I was lucky to have great teachers all along, people like Aida Barenboim (pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim’s mother), Elena Varvarova, Brigitte Engerer, Vladimir Krainev, and Rena Shereshevskaya, and I was given additional support and guidance from the great conductor Carlo Maria Giulini as well as Maria Curcio, a great piano pedagogue who had been Artur Schnabel’s student (who’d himself studied with Theodor Leschetizky, who had studied with Carl Czerny, who was Beethoven’s long-time pupil…). I was lucky to have a professional musician for a father, Didier Lepauw, a First Violin in the Orchestre de Paris, who coached me daily throughout my childhood. At ten years old, I started performing in public and have done so ever since.

My curious mind nevertheless pulled me away from a traditional concert pianist’s trajectory. Instead of attending music school, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and English Literature from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where I also learned a lot about film and theater, two other passions of mine. It was also there that I had my first taste in organizing, leading the school’s French Cultural Association as President my senior year. I organized festivals and conferences in collaboration with many other cultural organizations as well as Embassies in DC, and learned to manage large teams in the process. After school I wandered for a bit in Europe and eventually decided to get a Masters in Music from Northwestern University, where I studied piano with Ursula Oppens and James Giles. During that time I also had the incredible opportunity to work with the very legendary American pianist Earl Wild, who was in his nineties and has since died. Working with Earl was an experience that gave me wings (a story I may elaborate on in a future post).

I’ve done innumerable things since then: started (and stopped) a print magazine on culture; performed a Beethoven world premiere; made a recording which reached #24 on the Classical Billboard Charts; founded the revolutionary International Beethoven Project in Chicago, a multi-disciplinary all-inclusive arts organization mixing tradition and new ideas in critically-acclaimed festivals and special events; given speeches and interviews about moving classical music into the future (by starting with the present); performed a lead role in an award-winning play (33 Variations which won the Jeff Award); was artistic director of a ballet (Beethoven’s Creatures of Prometheus); been named “Chicagoan of the Year for Classical Music” in the Chicago Tribune in 2012; performed concertos with orchestras; performed chamber music with world renowned musicians; played on live radio and television; been praised in the New York Times for my New York City trio debut at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall; taught masterclasses and piano students as far away as China; and adjudicated piano competitions. While I have benefited from a good amount of luck, I have worked extremely hard to make all of this happen.

My next projects, this one included, are intended to have a wide global impact and to be done at the very highest level of professionalism with the greatest degree of care.

I've had the great support of the best family and the best friends, but now I also need your support in making this possible, and I will work hard to make you proud participants of this project!

Thank you for taking the time to read. If you have questions, please reach out; I will answer.
