Who Am I?

My name is Gerald Burke and I love to make things. Making things doesn't pay well, that's why I work at [Retail Empire]. Working at [Retail Empire] pays my bills and I genuinely don't mind doing it, but I do have that dream that all makers have... not working for a disgusting exploitative corporation. That said, I'm here on Patreon to see if it's possible to make my living making things. Whether or not I can make enough money here or elsewhere will not impact whether I keep making things. I'll make them either way. But if I could possibly devote more of my time to writing/games/etc... than i do to expanding [Retail Empire]'s profit margin, I feel I might be more fulfilled as a human. I appreciate anyone that subscribes or even looks at my stuff for more than half a second. All I ever wanted was to make things, and with your help I might just be able to do that full time.

What Do I Do?

Before anything else, I consider myself a writer. The definition of that, however, has changed itself in my mind over the years. When I was young I thought my writing was just a way to tell all the stories that were floating around in my head. I've thought about the roles of journalists and novelists and all the other "-ists" that make up the writing world, but I've never really felt myself drawn to any one thing in particular. I still write poems, short stories, editorials, and even academic essays, but I don't let those works define me as a writer. I'm not a poet, journalist, etc...

Another great passion in my life has been making games. I'm a novice video game developer and still well within the realm of studentship, though informally now. I made a decision a few semesters in that a game design degree wasn't really worth 60K+. I largely use online courses to learn specific skills and I must say the experience has been much cheaper and more enriching.

I also have interests in film, podcasting, music, etc... so the best thing to expect from me is "stuff" in the most general terms you can imagine. It will be mostly games and writing, but don't be surprised to find literally anything else.

Everything I post will go here and then up on the website GeraldBurke.com

What Make This Different From All The Other People Doing Literally This?

I'm a big ol' lefty scum lord with some hippy-dippy ideas about how information should be shared. While I reserve the right to charge money for things that I make (I need to pay my bills) every project that I work on as myself (can't promise every collaborator will be down for this) and release for myself, will be licensed CC0 and in the public domain. This is something I've been doing with my art lately, and if I'm to really 'walk the talk' I've got to 'put my money where my mouth is', 'nut up or shut up' and just [platitude]. This means that everything that I make that pops up here is free for anyone to use. Period. You can literally take the things I made, repackage them, and sell them. People will think you're a hack, but that is totally your prerogative. I don't object at all.

Aside from that, I am a special and unique snowflake and my voice is both textured and matters. If you consume my art, you'll get to know me. You'll hear my stories and put together the rich tapestry that is my life. I promise you, it's rad. I'm rad. My middle school English teacher once said of me "Why is it that every time someone imagines going back in time, they have to be someone important?" . My Grandfather even said "The use of profanity in writing is a sign of a weak mind", thank fuck I was only 9 and was able to correct course. It would be a goddamn shame if I relied on some such bullshit crutch.

If you support me, you support a man that could be the next Ernest Hemmingway. I'm developing a drinking problem and I like cats, now all I need is a spine and a point of view.
Tiers
Bespoke Crap
$5 or more per month 0 of 100 patrons
At this tier, I will make you a bespoke piece of art, writing, music(small). This could be a sketch, a ditty, or even a poem. This one will work annually, so if you stay at this level for 12 months, you get another thing.
More Bespoke Crap
$10 or more per month 0 of 50 patrons
At this level, I will make you a (small) thing every 3 months. That's right, 3 months. That's 4 times as many as the level below for only twice the price. It cannot be beat. Try it. You can't, just doesn't happen.
Maximum Bespoke Crap
$20 or more per month 0 of 25 patrons
What is this tier? It's a (small) thing every month. Not every other month, not every 20 months. Every single month. Tell your family. Tell your neighbours. You will have so much custom made crap every month, you'll begin to resent it. You'll cast off your possessions and move to the mountains to rediscover yourself. You'll train, you'll grow strong. You'll return to your old home a stranger. When you see old friends you'll laugh and cast them aside. You are new, you are different. But it still nags at you. You know where you are, you have an idea about where you're going, but can you reckon with where you've been? You shudder, it's a lie. You scream and tear down your new hair. You drink a bottle of shiraz and paint yourself naked in a mirror. You were lost, but now you are found. You are a warrior, and you will never forget again.
Goals
$0 of $1,500 per month
This will replace my income at [Retail Empire]. This will make me happy and I can spend more time making things and enjoying my family. They really are a great family.
