About

In Summary

I want to re-ignite my research, writing and publishing of the Ghostsigns blog, while adding a series of live events and video content to this work. To do so I need your support, at a level you can afford, and in return you'll be the first to receive the latest research and developments from my explorations in the realm of fading painted signs.

Background

In December 2018 the Ghostsigns blog was 'mothballed' after publishing continuosly at various frequencies since June 2007. There were 691 posts on a wide range of topics over this time, and it was a difficult decision for me to stop doing something that I enjoyed immensely. However, I felt that my circumstances at the time, with a young family, busy work schedule, and imminent move to Spain, I couldn't continue to voluntarily commit the time and effort required to keep publishing.

Recently I've been re-engaging with my work on Ghostsigns, primarily through the delivery of 'virtual' walking tours in the context of Covid-19, and participating in the recent Ghost Signs of Glasgow Conference. This has made me realise that I still have a lot to share, and learn, on the topic, and that I'd like to find a way to include this within my working day. Patreon offers a way to do so through the financial support of followers and fellow aficionados.

What Next?

This will essentially comprise a big experiment which I hope you will be a part of. I have a backlog of posts which I can dust off in the first instance, but there is much more that I can see happening in the future. Things I have in mind include:

  • Introducing video content. My walking tours offer an initial place to build this type of content, but there is no doubt more that can be done;
  • Hosting live events. These would include opportunities to meet and learn from others around the world that are working on the topic, including book authors, archivists and tour guides;
  • Building a global map. One of the projects that got mothballed with the blog was the development of a global 'crowd-sourced' mapping application. I would love to bring this back to life and begin soliciting contributions from around the world;
  • Consolidating my research. Much of my research is spread over multiple blog posts, or stashed away in my computer. I'd like to start bringing it together in extended written papers (1,500–5,000 words) and publishing these as standalone PDFs.
  • Writing the Ghostsigns book(s). Longer term I'd like to finally get round to writing the book 'Ghostsigns of London', perhaps to be followed up by 'The World of Ghostsigns'.

I would also be keen to know what you are most interested in i.e. this has the potential to become driven by subscribers through the direct messaging aspect of Patreon, and the ability to conduct polls on the platform. I would be delighted to respond positively to subscribers demands for more/less of particular types of content, including direct contributions from your own experience and research.

The only way this will happen is by me doing it, with your support. You'll notice that all the sponsorship tiers are the same, which is done intentionally to allow you to support the initiative at a level that you can afford/justify. If you're feeling especially generous then you are able to manually increase the monthly subscription.
Goals
$88.84 of $400.19 per month
I'll block out a full day each month, in addition to my spare time, to dedicate to the research and publishing of material. This level of support also puts the pressure on to deliver. Which is a good thing :-)
