ginger is creating a window into life after trauma

we often get stories of hope and strength, of healing and overcoming struggles, when you hear about people with mental illness or stories about victims/survivors of sexual violence, and those aren't bad, but they aren't a full picture of what people are facing.

i want to showcase the fuller picture, and educate people on what it is like to live life after trauma, to live life with pretty severe mental illness, and showcase the struggle of healing.

so first off, who am i?

you can call me ginger--it's not my real name, but it serves me well given my overall appearance and username choices. i am 25 years old, and have almost obtained my masters in clinical mental health counseling. i am the middle of five children, an aries sun and moon with a cancer rising, a bisexual/asexual woman, and a victim/survivor of sexual violence.

why am i doing this?

i have always wanted to help people.
i think my story and my voice can do that.
i think education about mental health and sexual violence can do that.
i have a deep passion for helping people understand and learn and grow, and i have a deep passion to do all of those things myself. this project will allow me to continue to develop my understanding of myself, mental health, and sexual violence and learn and grow towards healing.

what am i hoping to create?

i want this to be a project of vulnerability and education. i want to create blog posts, essays, video blogs, images, music, and whatever else i can manage to showcase my story and my healing. i want to educate folks about sexual violence. the different types, what they look like, consent, title ix, statistics, rape culture, victimology, ptsd, depression, suicide, etc. i learned a lot about everything because no one was there to help me when i needed it and i didn't want anyone else to have to go through that alone.

i went from an activist on campus to working as an educational programmer for title ix at my undergraduate college for almost three years teaching faculty and staff, as well as students, about sexual violence and title ix. i hope to combine my knowledge of mental health and experience as a crisis counselor to create a more full and personal picture.

i want to show these topics not only in an educational way (presentations, essays) but also in a personal way (blogging and vlogging, and personal art pieces)--because this is personal. sexual violence and mental health touch almost everyone's lives and we understand so little about both.

why patreon?

creating anything takes resources, which need money to sustain them. cameras, editing software, a good computer, a good microphone, time and energy to write and film and then edit...

i hope you'll find my information and time valuable enough to consider supporting me in being able to do this permanently and maybe even as my job. i may pull other people i know into showcase more voices and stories, but for now it'll just be me. it won't always be pretty, but it will be me.

i hope you'll join me, support me, and i hope you'll be able to take away something meaningful.
