We are Girl Museum, the first and only museum in the world dedicated to celebrating girls and girlhood. We started in 2009 as a bare-bones virtual museum and have expanded into a world-class producer of exhibitions, collaborative projects, podcasts, and other media that document, preserve, and advocate for girls’ unique culture and rights around the world. We are led by an all-volunteer Senior Staff and provide numerous internship and volunteer opportunities.

As a virtual museum, we don’t have typical museum costs like building maintenance, temperature control, conservation materials, or insurance. We work from our homes and public spaces around the world, and dedicate all of our funds to sustaining our virtual space and producing awesome programs that are turning museums and the world on its patriarchal head.

In 2017, we had almost 100,000 visitors, produced 4 exhibitions including a collaboration with African-American artist darlene anita scott, grew to a senior staff of 10, and produced a podcast series listened to by over 21,000 people. Our successes let us know two things:

  1. Girl Museum should exist for a long time. Our model works, enabling people to access girls history and culture — and use it at home, in classrooms, and in public spaces - with just an Internet connection. We’re obsessed with our work — it’s fun, engaging, and built around a tribe who want to turn cultural heritage into the inclusive, gender-equal space it should be.
  2. We need to make Girl Museum self-sustaining for this to work. Infrequent fundraisers and one-time donations were fine for the past ten years, but it’s not sustainable. Our savings are unimpressive, and we are trying to grow. If Girl Museum is to exist in perpetuity, and help the heritage field finally be inclusive and equitable towards girls, it has to have sustained funding.

We are thrilled to unveil our plan for long-term sustainability: the Girl Museum Sisterhood, available exclusively via Patreon. We’ve received one-off donations ever since we put a Paypal button on the site, but a lot of donors prefer to give monthly — it makes donating more budget-friendly for all of us. Patreon is a proven platform to build communities dedicated to sustaining the things they care about most. So anything, from $1/month up, is hugely helpful to our cause.

What We’ll Use the Money For
Our initial goal is $125/month. That money will be enough to sustain our basic operations, including:
  • Website, security, and administrative costs of $600;
  • Hootsuite subscription to ensure our message reaches everyone, $400;
  • Program design and implementation, including new plugins for our website, building new platforms for community engagement, and pop-up events, $300; and
  • Contingency funds of $200 per year, to grow our reserves in the event of another attack.

Those are the basics. With those pieces covered, Girl Museum can support itself and focus on ‘stretch goals’ that will enable us to expand programs, advocate more effectively, and support the professional needs of our magic-making team. More on those later.

Simply being totally supported by our visitors’ generosity makes us endlessly grateful, no matter what else happens. Thank you for your support and helping make the world a better place for girls.

Cheers,
