About READ ME ⎜Girls on Tops

Wouldn't it be cool if women in film were treated like rockstars? Girls on Tops is a celebration of female voices, emblazoning white T-shirts with the names of actors, directors, producers, writers that we love, founded in 2017.

Now, Girls on Tops is proud to actively support and elevate emerging artists as well, by funding film projects and commissioning female-led film writing and criticism on our editorial platform, READ ME. This is where you come in.

Why READ ME? Why should I read you?

Lynne Ramsay's 2002 feature Morvern Callar was the first film that made us realised that it's so cool to watch what happens when a woman is in charge (and yes, our cover image is taken from MC!). With READ ME, our goal is to channel the same energy: to publish stimulating, challenging and wholly original writing, exclusively from a female perspective.

We encourage our writers to dive deep into the films and filmmakers they care about, bringing their own feelings into focus with sharp analysis. We're proud to shed light on titles and people from all around the world – from a thorough education on the outstanding career of Albanian trailblazer Xhanfize Keko, to a personal reading of Oscar-nominated documentary Minding the Gap by a writer reckoning with her own experience with masculinity and abuse.

We signpost new releases we adore, and support seminal films over time that deserve more love. We don't need clickbait or hot takes, we take time and produce work that lasts.

Every piece is thoroughly crafted, edited, and worked through in a collaborative process. This hopefully gives our writers the tools and confidence to pursue their ambitions, in an industry that too often struggles to find both the time and resources needed to nurture and reward voices that should be heard.

Why does READ ME need financial support?

We are proud to pay our writers for every bit of their hard work, and we will never compromise on this. We believe in growing and rewarding effort, giving editorial content as much clout as our T-shirts continue to receive worldwide.

To this end, with your support we will be able to commission more work and publish more writers. As our site continue to grow, we need our support to as well – READ ME is here for the long run.

Your money will help pay our writers, and allow the development of even more projects to take shape in innovative ways. Watch this space...

But what will I get out of it?

By supporting READ ME, you will receive a two-pronged reward.

MORE CONTENT FROM ALL YOUR FAVOURITE WOMEN

First, you will be actively helping the needle to shift within film criticism. A selection of overwhelming statistics favouring male critics was released in a 2018 USC Annenberg study entitled Critic's Choice?, revealing that only 22.2% of all reviews of the highest-grossing films of 2017 were written by women, and a mere 24% of all Top Critics (writers whose work appears in major publications) on Rotten Tomatoes are women. So, the more criticism we publish on READ ME, the more those numbers balance out. And when that happens, we'll all feel great.

MORE TEES? YOUR TEES? CHEAP TEES?

Secondly – READ ME is the child of Girls on Tops, a T-shirt company that continues to grow and sate the needs of fashionable film fans everywhere. Consider your donations to READ ME like a loyalty scheme with Girls on Tops. You will earn discounts, exclusives, voting power, birthday treats and more. You support us, we reward and celebrate you.

I skipped to the bottom, what do I need to know?

If you support READ ME with a small amount of money each month, you will be rewarded with exclusive editorial content as well as discounted t-shirts, voting power on new t-shirts, and a conscience that can sleep easy, knowing you have done a very good thing.
