About Good Kids, Mad City - Englewood

Good Kids, Mad City is working directly with youth in the line of fire. Englewood is one of Chicago's most dangerous neighborhoods, seeing a shooting death every week and shots fired almost daily in 2020. Our programs give them the tools they need to navigate the unique challenges young people face and build a positive future for themselves. Your support helps us reach more kids and craft a bigger vision for transforming our community. Some of our programs include:

  • Open Wounds First Aid Trauma Program: Basic first responder training for youth to be able to provide aid to gunshot victims until the ambulance arrives.
  • Hangout Hubs: Positive enriching alternatives for youth to experience community, connection, and normalcy in the midst of a difficult environment.
  • Police Accountability: Training for youth on how to understand and advocate for their rights, interact with police officers, and understand the history of policing in our community.
  • Art Expressions: Art classes that facilitate the healing of trauma due to gun violence and systemic racism.

A Note from Our Founder & Executive Director

Hi, I'm Carlil Pittman. I was born and raised in Englewood, where I experienced first hand the challenges that come with growing up in a community plagued by violence and the legacy of systemic racism. Fortunately I was able to connect with the right mentors and leaders, who helped me choose a path of enabling the next generation to create a better community.

I've spent my career working with youth, educators, policy makers, and other key partners to ensure that more kids have resources to address trauma and receive opportunities to be young people despite growing up in a difficult environment. I love seeing students in our community graduate high school and go on to pursue their dreams.

I started Good Kids, Mad City as a way to focus specifically on the problem of gun violence in our community, and it's been incredible building relationships with the next generation and hearing their vision for the future of our community. Good Kids, Mad City is currently sponsored by the Southwest Organizing Project where I work full-time. My goal with this Patreon project is to facilitate Good Kids, Mad City standing on its own and building on the programs already in place to further transform the Englewood community. Every patron who comes on board brings us one step closer to a brighter future for these wonderful kids.
Goals
$168.51 of $1,500 per month
$1,500 a month will allow us to provide scholarship stipends to five youth in the Englewood community to support the rest of our work and invest in our community.
