Hello - my name is Gabrielle. I'm a motorcycle-riding, travelling portrait photographer and storyteller and I've started this Patreon to make work that’s free from a commercial agenda. This involves making connections to people, that result in stories, insights and other joyful flashes of life which have value but don't necessarily earn money in the modern marketplace.

I've been making photographs for 20 years, yet it still feels like I'm at the beginning - in the best possible way. My work has received awards, hung in the National Portrait Gallery in London, been published as a book, and in several publications like the Guardian.

Have you ever come across a scene or a person in life which made you want to photograph it? Maybe you made a photograph in your mind's eye? Perhaps you made an actual photograph. Was it the one you wanted? Did you get close enough? If not, why not?

From looking at my work, you might think I've overcome my fear of photographing people, but I'd like to let you in on the truth. I overcome my fear every time I do it. The fear doesn't disappear. I learn how to handle it. And that's a skill for life. I just happen to have learned it from photography.

So why do I do it?

I'm driven by a fascination with people, a love for the art of photography, and its power to tell stories and make us feel connected. I believe people are mostly good and well-intentioned. If they weren't, there would be a lot more chaos. I photograph nearly every day, whether its a commission or a personal project. But the thing is commissions (unless you're a *super rock star photographer*) seldom pay enough these days to survive, nor pave the way for the most progressive or inspiring work. I'm not interested in using my talents to sell you something you don't want or need. So I have always leaned more towards personal work. This allows me to create that which is motivated by a desire to connect with people, not profit from them, and travel wherever I'm led.

Speaking of which, travel has always been important to me. I'm drawn to stories from people with different experiences to mine. To that end, I've even driven a motorcycle from Stonehenge (England) to Arctic Henge (Iceland), and around Scotland (the Orkney and Hebrides included). I've lived in Iceland and made a book about equality and the nation's mindset, studied in France and spent time in most of Europe, and also lived in the USA and Canada. I travel to change; to discover and understand more about the world, new cultures, and ways of thinking.

This video made by Sean Tucker gives you an example of my work and shows me in action photographing on the street:

This is what drives me as a travelling photographer and storyteller, and is where you come in.

You can support the work I make by becoming a patron. This enables me to keep doing what I do, sustainably. In return for as little as the cost of one meal a year, you get in-depth access to the images I create, and the stories I uncover. Depending on your level of support/membership this will also include:

  1. Access to work in progress.
  2. Insight into my process for approaching and taking images of strangers.
  3. Training on how to make better images, especially authentic-feeling portraits of anyone from strangers to close family.
  4. Post-processing tips from editing down and selecting your images to colour correction.
  5. Behind-the-scenes stories of interactions with people and travel journals of my time spent exploring the world on my motorbike and on foot.
  6. Mental health and creativity are also fascinating topics for me. Creativity and health are intrinsically related. I will share how I'm caring for and nurturing myself.

As an "Invested Patron", you'll get access to my process and insights as a photographer and writer, which I would not feel comfortable sharing with the general public. Have a look at the membership tiers for more options and information.

If you'd like to see more of my work or read about my background, visit www.gabriellemotola.com

My Instagram feed @gmotophtos has a steady stream of photographs with generous amounts of short-story, but my Patron-only blog is where the full stories and insight will be.

For the book I produced about equality and Icelandic society visit www.anequaldifference.com

If you have questions or just want to connect, you can send me a message here or email me at [email protected]

If you want to know more about how Patreon works, they made this short video you can watch.

I'm excited about this endeavour. It's taken me a long time and many conversations with other artists I respect to finally get over my fear of failure and launch this. It is going to be a safe yet wild ride to who knows where.

That said, I do have other rewards in mind which I'll build in and add as time goes on. I'll also be in touch from time to time to get ideas about how I can better reward my patrons. I hope you'll join me and if you enjoy it, help spread the word too.

They say when the student is ready, the teacher appears. I'm going to make my first video, add it here and post it on YouTube. Four years of films school, three as an intern and a runner, a camera assistant, a documentary cinematographer, twelve years as an editor and ten as a colourist it is time I got back into filmmaking. What kept me so long? I could make a video about that too. Or write a book.
