About

MONEY IS IRRELEVANT

What I do:

If you've read some of my work, even a paragraph, you know my style of writing isn't first in line to receive clickbait sponsorships by popular online outlets. It is just not in format. And that's okay. Read more about why this work is important to me and we below. But first, a look at the past few years in my writing realm:

  • Monthly listings/newsletters to 450+ subscribers via Mailchimp.
  • Traveled, lived in for a time, cooked, volunteered, stopped through, and written unique pieces from Bogotá, Paris, Moscow, Las Vegas, Toronto, Yerevan, Gyumri, Vienna, Rouen, Salzburg, Los Angeles, Istanbul, Lefkoşa/Nicosia, New York, Tunis, and of course Detroit.
  • Published Andanzas, Vol. I, Friends, by Bang Pang Editorial, my first book, of four short stories on friendship, kinship, and social critiques. Read this national review for more info.
  • Published 38 pieces in The Metropolitan, a Detroit-based media outlet, covering anything from food, to cultural events, and travelogues, poetry, social and political essays, and even environmental narratives.
  • Published as a contributor to The Detroit Neighborhood Guidebook, by Belt Publishing.
  • Consulted and coached 8 other writers on their writing styles, goals, approach and choices regarding their own works, developments, and even resumes.
  • Recognized as a Salzburg Global Fellow for work within the literary and cultural sectors.

There are surely more things, especially outside the literary, but these points stood out. That being said, I am committed to remaining a freelance and free professional spirit. Largely funding my living expenses through Public Relations and Social Media contract work, my writing and travel and collaborative works are not really covered by my own means and certainly have not found any level of sustainability.

And no, this is not a 'give me money or I quit' plea. Nor is it a floe of disparity for lack of sustainability. I will continue to do what calls to me, but funds greatly help! I recognize the large demands and expense regarding the approach of my undertakings these past few years but see plenty of ways to continue, and this is one of them.

I'd like to think about my presence on Patreon and commitments to my readers and 'superfans' such as Patrons, as something both preemptive but also as a unique response to a demonstrated need.

Why this is important to me and we:

My work is not static. Over the past few years I have been slowly finding my voice. Starting in 2016 I started writing my own food adventure blog called HERB'd that focused on vegetarian and vegan dining in Detroit. Later, I dipped into some political essays and reports, then later to find my most favored and strongly written works in sociopolitical/sociocultural travelogues and prose. Starting first in Bogotá, I have been exploring my coined "Gibran quality" and "urban fancifulness" written works with broader perspectives and surely greater physical distance.

The work I do is especially important, not because of accolades, but rather because it is rooted in an uplifting, imaginative, yet realistic style with a purpose to make readers think, consider, and break up monotony. Future goals are to just carry on breaking down barriers and blasting biases, while continuing my work in cross-cultural understandings. In a sense my works touch on life as it is and life as it could be, and we are all part of it.

We all share in on these stories. If by chance some of us still cling to some innocence and admitted unknowing, perhaps we can be just impressionable enough, together, to learn something new.

Contributions will aid in future travelogues, print publications, and literary development.

Couple reviews of my work:

Michelle Andonian -
Julien Godman travels through his palace of memories - as life’s moments flicker back like a 8mm film, he is brave enough to watch, and share them with us. -- A stunning debut.

Marsha Music -
It is a spare but wonderous work, evidence of a writer who understands the power of words, even - or especially - in brevity. Julien writes in calming, dream-like, sequences of everyday occurrences that pull you into his world, reminiscent of the works of Anais Nin. There is a mystical, Gibran quality to the work, and deep, startling twists. He writes with a kind of urban fancifulness, a sweet, street view of experiences in this city.

Last note:

If you can't afford to support financially, but still love the work I am doing, and would like to support another way, please consider sharing with your social and personal contacts. If you know me, perhaps mention something unique to us, or unique to your voice. If you don't know me, perhaps mention something about my work or a related experience.

Thank you, truly.

Goals
$36 of $150 per month
This goal, monthly, can do things like chart course to regional destinations for more localized works, or it could give me time to commit to more literary developments such as participating in workshops, seminars, or workspaces that help me grow!
