About

This system is fucked.

That's why I'm here to help.

American politics is deeply messed up. It's never been easy (no form of politics is), but now it seems endlessly chaotic. Our country is increasingly polarized, our polity is entirely partisan, and the truth is lost in the shuffle. Hell, even figuring out what the truth is has become another job for people who are already underpaid, overburdened and ready to disengage from seemingly intractable and irreconcilable issues.

What if the people talking about politics tried to help? What if we tried to illuminate, investigate, and challenge? What if we changed the assumptions of a politics that has so often been dominated by white men? What if we stopped pretending that we don't have biases and started acknowledging how they were informing our perspectives instead? What if we remembered history, let the past be prologue, and gave people context for the crises of today? What if we had real punditry?

I'm Kaitlin Byrd, and I've started this page with the aspiration to do exactly that. I've already written about the future of the Democratic Party, the white supremacy at the heart of Republican politics and the ways in which Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's legacy has shaped and been shaped by America. I pick topics where I can add insight. Because I want people to feel like politics is for them.

For politics to make sense, to be accessible, to be empowering, it has to first be understood. And for politics to be understood, it must be open. I don't think politics is just for the suits. I don't think it's a man's game. I don't think it's about white voters. I don't think it's all about the money. Politics is, and must always be, about the people.

That's what my project is about. I began writing about politics as GothamGirlBlue on Twitter, unrestrained and unfettered by the notion of what should be. And though my name is now out and about, I still bring the same openness, approachability and sharp-edged analysis to my idea of what our politics can be.

I'll be writing about all the intersections I live at -- race, gender, economics, culture, and politics -- in ways that inform as much as they entertain. I hope you join this journey with me.
