Courtney Campbell is creating Blog Posts

If it involves Dungeons or Dragons, I'm going to write about it.

Five Blog Posts a Week!
$75 per Blog post
This goal moves me fully into "part time job" territory, allowing me to spend an additional day a week generating content. I'll be able to guarantee 5 posts a week that I will continue to write on whatever topic I feel like! Money won't change me!
Full Time Writer/Game Designer
$100 per Blog post
At this point, I'll be earning enough at this to have it be a primary income source! This goal is completely unrealistic and will never be reached. It's the internet, I'll never be proven wrong.
In all seriousness, this is life-altering. My job at this point will be generating gaming content, either on the blog or for publication. Anything I produce and publish will be available to all my patreon backers in .pdf form or in hard copy for cost.

Hi. I'm Courtney Campbell. I'm a guy who went with his father at age five to buy a 1st edition Players Handbook. We sat in a mall pizza outlet and flipped through it together. The image of A Paladin in Hell sold me.

I've never been happier than when I've been playing, writing, drawing, or thinking about Dungeons and Dragons.

I've always been an outsider to the industry.  For the first 20 years, I cajoled my friends and acquaintances to play games with me. I taught people who were already my friends to play. It was important to have a game and get to do what I loved to do!

My love for gaming got the better of me. I started a blog and I love it. I've been writing for over three years, and have over 700 blog posts. I contributed articles on an examination of theory, practical advice for running a game, analysis of traps and ways to run them effectively, classic tropes, top 10 lists and more!

You know I really like Dungeons & Dragons.

I'm going to keep writing on the blog just like I'm going to keep playing Dungeons & Dragons and other games, because I love it. It allows me to not only connect with other gamers, but also share some of my experience and prodigious output of content. It's a part of my life!

But I'm also a father of a beautiful one year old girl and married to a wonderful woman who games. Like everyone in the creative industry, I have to hold down a full time job in order to work on creative projects. And writing five blog posts a week, especially the kind of blog posts I write, like the Ecology series, and the Iconic Character series, takes up a lot of time. Between 10 and 20 hours every week.

Explicitly, I will continue to do this. My blog is free, my content is free, and want to continue to provide that sort of content for free. I write up to 20 posts a month, this year I averaged 15.

But I do want to provide an avenue for people to acquire good karma by supporting me in a direct, regular way. The Patreon campaign allows me to have more time to produce content, and work on secondary projects for release. This support, no matter what the level, gives me the chance to generate more content rather than spending time on the pursuit of necessities. Knowing that you support me, no matter what you choose to give really makes a difference! You won't be "paying for blog posts". You'll be donating some of your time, so I have more time to do something you love.

What's more, are the rewards! Given the chance you can receive insider comments and commentary about posts, a link posted on my blog, access to pages from my personal notebooks every month, and even the satisfaction of showing my wife that I'm really not wasting all this time writing about Dungeons and Dragons. Stretch goals include the opportunity to get 5 posts a week guaranteed, a .pdf of collected content, online hangouts to discuss blog posts and other community topics, and even access to my other published works and a print versions at cost for all backers!
And that's the way of the future I think. Here's to you and what we can do together!

The annoying details:

  • I will produce approximately 20 blog posts a month, never more than this amount. These posts, along with all content on the blog is free, will remain free, and will be produced regardless of whether or not I get a single backer. Just look at the last three years of daily posts!
  • Any content I produce due to the funding of this campaign will be free to my readers also! I'm pretty sure this is one of the foundations of the Patreon system. You aren't buying blog posts, you're supporting journalists, artists, and musicians doing what they love and sharing it for free!
  • I write between 10 and 20 posts a month. The continued success of this campaign will allow it to tend towards 20 posts, one each weekday. I only charge for the posts that have content, and you are always free to limit your monthly total to a level you can afford. Even your support at 10 cents a post for a dollar or two a month makes a substantial difference in my life!
