Why is the Hardcore Literature Book Club on Patreon?

You guys are amazing. You’ve been asking for a book club, suggesting specific literary lectures and book series, and asking for a way to support Hardcore Literature. You’ve shared your reading adventure and insights with me, and I am so grateful to have such a wonderful group of friends filled with nuanced, sensitive, intelligent thinkers who love the great books.

You can now support Hardcore Literature, directly resulting in more shows, exclusive content, my endless love, and become part of a book club dedicated to deep reading and living the great books together.

Hardcore Literature is in its infancy at the moment, but I believe we’re doing something really special here. Schools don’t teach you how to read the great books - at least, not in the deeply fulfilling way I like to read the great books. And, now more than ever, there seems to be a real hunger for this kind of learning and shared reading experience.

Joining the book club is directly supporting insightful content around literary appreciation and making sure there is more of it. There are a lot of costs involved with putting Hardcore Literature out into the world (various hosting, equipment, editing, personnel, etc), not to mention my time. Not counting the reading and research I’ve done over the years, each lecture takes at least 20 hours of preparation. And I think it shows. The Hardcore Literature Podcast has no ads, no filler, no rambling, and gets straight into the meat of the subject and stays there, demanding we both bring our whole selves to our books, for hours at a time. With your help, I can produce more lectures, more videos, more reading guides, more audio-series, and kick off a ton of great long-term lectures, group book chats, and raise and nurture a community of deep-readers.

Your membership will enrol you in a Great Books Reading Club, with hand-picked classic works, and we will read these great books deeply, slowly, and together over the long-term.

We’ll take 8-10 weeks with Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, with hours of lectures, thought-provoking questions, tasks, and reading/listening/viewing assignments to deepen your reading journey. When we read Tolstoy, we’ll also read Plato, Pater, Pushkin, listen to Mozart and Strauss, and much more.

After Anna Karenina, our next Big Book will be Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment, followed by Jane Austen’s Persuasion, and Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. In that time, we’ll also do classes on short stories by Chekhov, Turgenev, Maupassant, and Borges, and poetry appreciation classes on Emily Dickinson, Robert Browning, Shelley, and Blake.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting Hardcore Literature and joining the Serious Readers Book Club. You will get exclusive deep bookish content depending on which tier you feel is best for you - Dickens, Proust, Shakespeare, Homer. We’re building this out together and having you a part of the club means the world to me.
With love,
Benjamin McEvoy

P.S. Here’s some insight into my vision for Hardcore Literature 2021-2023:

Several long-running literary lecture series about the great books
- we’re starting with Anna Karenina, but there’s a long literary road to wander down together. These lectures will ask you to bring your whole self to the works and really live the books in a life-changing way.

A quarterly book club box -
I’d love to get the books on the syllabus physically shipped to you as we work through them so we’re all working from the same edition/translation and using books that are both beautiful and receptive to marginalia. I’d also love to stuff the box with tons of bookish goodies so you really look forward to its arrival.

Hardcore Literature Crew -
Writers, scholars, teachers, doctors, engineers, some relatively big names and interesting figures who are masters of their domain reach out to me every day with their knowledge about the great books. I would love to start hiring a professional team, starting with cameramen, editors, and designers, but then moving onto literary discussion leaders who can help host the book clubs and spark compelling discussion.

Live events -
I’ve had several listeners of Hardcore Literature pick up on my “book retreat” idea and want me to run with it. Like a yoga retreat, but we spend the time reading, writing, discussing, hiking, and doing the “Walden” thing together.

Collectable journals, bookmarks, and badges -
Every time I start deep-reading a Great Big Book, I crack open a beautiful new journal. Proust, Tolstoy, Shakespeare - all have gorgeous journals stuffed with my handwritten notes. It really brings appreciation and understanding to the next level. But, as a journal connoisseur, I can definitely see some improvements with journal design. I think it would be awesome if we all slowly built up handwritten journals together as we tackle each new book. And a cute collectable bookmark/badge system would be fun (Russian bookmark unlocked after you’ve read the top three writers; a Classics bookmark for reading Homer).

Professional documentary series -
I have a few passion projects that will expand into other subject areas: History, Art Appreciation, Musical Theory. The first one may be “Shakespeare’s Kings and Queens”, a ten-part documentary that will leave you with a deep understanding of English History and a thorough appreciation of Shakespeare. A little bit of support will help the production costs to make it as amazing as can be.

Interactive Book Bard hangout -
Running a high-quality exclusive forum is a lot of work. You want to keep it as a little family where everyone is respected and valued. There are already a few digital domains that bookworms can hangout, but they aren’t particularly positive places to hangout. I foresee a forum where we can come together in our shared appreciation of the Great Books.

Thank you for supporting Hardcore Literature!
