About Harriet Tubman Center For Social Justice

Harriet Tubman Center for Social Justice on Pico Blvd in Mid City is a community center and organization where the movement for justice and peace expresses itself.

What we do:
From screenings of progressive films followed by rich political discussions, to planning meetings for street actions to defend the rights of immigrants and to defend Black Lives, and entertaining fundraising events, the HTCSJ has become a home to and a welcoming space for organizations from Los Angeles Workers Assembly, We Charge Genocide – LA, Socialist Unity Party, International League for Peoples’ Struggle, Radio Justice, and many others.

But our core staff are also activists in our own right – over the years we’ve petitioned for a Los Angeles ballot initiative to raise the minimum wage, demonstrated shoulder to shoulder with others against police racism and brutality, and walked strike picket lines with teachers, grocery workers, hotel workers and others. We’ve helped organize against imperialist war, and joined thousands in mass demonstrations carrying our signs and banners to defend our migrant sisters and brothers being criminalized and attacked by ICE.

What your funds go to:
  • Rent, internet and electrical bills for our HTCSJ center
  • https://radiojustice.org -a live broadcast station providing media to inform, empower, promote and advocate for social justice- is still operating within the HTCSJ center during LA COVID restrictions.
  • signs, banners and information flyers
  • Travel expense for our comrades to travel across the country and participate in the movement

Like all progressive organizers we have had to adapt to a new reality because of the Covid 19 pandemic. We continue to hit the streets, but for now it is in our cars with signs attached, initiating and participating in car caravans for an end to the U.S. blockade of Cuba, demanding justice for victims of police terror, and whatever other political challenges arise. And we’ve strengthened our online presence with webinars and other types of online activity. Still, even in the pandemic, we have kept the center functioning as a space for organizing meetings for our own staff and our progressive allies, so that the momentum of the progressive movement is not broken by the virus and by the ‘profits-first’ response by the corporate-owned White House.
Goals
$81.52 of $1,500 per month
When we reach $1,500 per month, this amount will cover all overhead costs per month to keep the HTCSJ center running and continue to operate radio Justice LA.
