    About

Aloha and mahalo a nui loa for visiting my Patreon page.

My name is Ryan, and I am a storyteller (former and always a journalist), creator (blogger, vlogger, podcaster, decent writer, fair photographer), connector (community organizer and network builder), cheerleader (advocate and supporter of local STEM and startup initiatives), father (of three fabulous kids), and husband (of the amazingest wife and mom).

I am also the Communications Director for Hawaii tech firm Hawaii Information Service, where we build the best tools for Hawaii property data and real estate professionals.

    What do I do?

I have immersed myself in new technologies and online communities since the days before the web. From running a dial-up BBS in high school, through USENET and web forums, to the umpteenth "next big thing" in social media. Throughout it all, I have long embraced and evangelized the ways in which technology can connect and bring people together.

And I love Hawaii, and everything it has to offer its people as well as the world. I think the Hawaiian Islands are a perfect place for inspiration, education, innovation, and transformation. I organize the annual Hawaii Geek Meet (12 years and running) and run HawaiiTech.com (covering local science and tech news and local tech jobs) and HawaiiCal.com (a local tech events calendar). I've also co-founded and worked with Hawaii startups (including KahanuNalu Scientific, and Smart Yields) and the local entrepreneurial community (including Blue Startups) to diversify and grow Hawaii's opportunities and Hawaii's economy. I'm privileged to work with Hawaii media like the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and KITV (ABC Honolulu) to share my love of science and technology with island residents.

I run the Hawaii Slack chat group and recently re-launched Hawaii Stories as a digital literary journal. Less frequently updated projects include Hawaii Blog (launched in 2000), Hawaii Star (which was Hawaii's first online newspaper), Hawaii Grinds (who isn't a food blogger), Hawaii Threads (back when message boards were king), and probably a dozen smaller Hawaii sites.

UPDATE: During the COVID-19 pandemic, I built a crowdsourced database of local restaurants to support, a directory of mask makers and mask-making groups, joined a startup building open-source ventilators to donate to local hospitals, was a contributing editor to Resilient Hawaii, maintained a database of COVID-19 statistics referenced by dozens of organizations, and produced ZIP code and case location maps.

    How can you help?

I am blessed with more support than I deserve, and if you've connected with or interacted with me in any way, you've already made my efforts worthwhile. Of course, anything you can do to amplify my hopefully informational or entertaining posts to a broader audience would be icing on the cake.

However, if you'd like to support and encourage my efforts, I would be immensely grateful for your support here on Patreon. No contribution is too small, no subscription window too short. Whether you help me get my gummy bear fix, buy me a coffee, or help me take my patient and loving wife or family to dinner, every little bit helps a lot.

Indeed, I have a full time job working with people I love. I have a loving family and caring friends. So if it causes you hardship in any way, please don't contribute here. Just throw a like or comment my way, and I'll still be your best friend!
