About Healing While Black

My name is Josh.
I’m a 25 year old Black, queer, aspiring social worker and life coach from New York City. I’m a suicide survivor and a proponent of radical softness for Black people. I write. I tweet. I make TikToks. I make well-intentioned white people and reactionary Black cisgender heterosexual men (read: hoteps) very uncomfortable.

What is Healing While Black?
Healing While Black was created in 2016, originally under the name Free Negro University. I started doing this because I needed something to take my mind off of my current reality – I was not in a good space mentally, emotionally, physically, financially, or academically.

I spent those first two and a half years trying to write and post like myself. I was following larger, more successful pro-Black pages and tried (unsuccessfully) to pattern my style after theirs. It was only after my page was temporarily shut down that I decided to make this page a reflection of the shift I was experiencing in my life.

I was accepted into an MSW program and decided to put Black queer, trans*, and non-binary people at the center of my work. The page was going to be dedicated to holistic mental health and wellness for us. We’ve been operating under the name Healing While Black for over a year now and have lofty goals for this brand.

What does your work consist of?
I’ve been writing articles, captions, blog posts for over six years now. I’ve presented on Afrofuturism, science fiction, and Black radical thought at conferences across the U.S, Canada, and Scotland.

Currently, my work focuses on linking Black and Indigenous People of Color with holistic mental health services and healing practices. I also spend a lot of energy highlighting the ways in which white mental health professionals can commit themselves to anti-oppression work.

What are your long-term goals for Healing While Black?
Finishing this degree, licensure, opening my practice, building an institute to help train future Blaqueer mental health practitioners.

Why should you pledge?
Hopefully, you have laughed/learned something from my Instagram posts and I’m incredibly grateful. I will continue to do this work for as long as possible and there are opportunities to build something really dope with your support.
