If this were one of our stories, perhaps it'd begin something like this:

Once upon a time, there was an artist and a storyteller and a 1966 Bedford RL truck... They lived in troubled times – sometimes it seemed like the magic had all run out of the world and all that was left was distraction and strife. So they decided to make something amazing, a device for spreading beauty and kindling imaginations, a spectacular creation to reignite old enchantments and bring wonder back into the greying world. And so, they created HEDGESPOKEN... A vehicle for the imagination!

That's what we wrote when we launched our Indiegogo campaign to raise the funds to build our travelling theatre and home on the back of a vintage Bedford RL truck, back in 2014. We were stunned by the generosity of our supporters - it seemed that many of you got the idea deeply and completely and wanted more of this kind of magic in the world just as much as we did, and were prepared to give us money to make it happen. Thank you - you know how much it meant to us.

This summer, among other places, we've taken the truck and our stories to the Green Gathering, Off Grid festival, Green Earth Awakening, Base Camp, Beautiful Days and the Hedge-u-cation camp. Often, we're at small events and family camps that can't afford to pay us for what we do - we sell Rima's beautiful artwork as well as copies of the Sometimes a Wild God book that we put out in 2015. Sometimes we run storytelling workshops and sometimes we run other workshops or sessions at events we're at.

We don't want to end up taking Hedgespoken as just an entertaining sideshow at big festivals - we want to use it as a vehicle for inspiring wonder and changing the world through the use of cunning magic, puppet-craft and stories, arts that touch the soul and enliven the spirit... We'd like to take our vehicle of the imagination to more and more places that need some of the Hedgespoken magic, but there's no way that most of those places are able to pay us for what we do. We're thinking about refugee camps, protest sites, marginal communities, deprived areas where conventional Art fears to tread...

Your long-term help means that we can spend more of our time creating amazing shows and workshops to take on the road and that we can take those shows to places that can't necessarily pay for them, so that we can reach ever more people with this old soul-magic that Hedgespoken is all about.

We want to keep developing Hedgespoken so that it continues to amaze and inspire wherever it goes - it seems that there's a real hunger for what we do. We want to grow and put many, many more amazing things on the stage. We've been developing our first major puppet theatre extravaganza this year and applied for Arts Council funding for it, but the climate for liminal arts isn't a good one and our first bid has been turned down - we need to raise funds independently to ensure that these new shows get developed and that everyone involved is fairly sustained.

There are many, many costs behind the scenes, too - a 1966 truck needs a lot of upkeep, and the petrol (yes, petrol) bills are painful and spare tyres come in at about £250 each, but we also need to invest in more kit to develop what we're doing and allow for greater possibilities of wonder and mischief - things such as:

  • an audience shelter to attach to the side of the truck, over the stage (think of a marquee, but with our truck and stage as one wall!)
  • heating for this shelter, so that we can continue to perform during the bleaker months
  • a caravan to serve as an office, library and store
  • a support vehicle to carry our shelter and other kit and cast members for big shows, as well as to pull the caravan
  • all the appropriate checks and certificates as we move into the arena of taking the truck into schools and the like...
  • a mighty samovar Russian tea urn from which to refresh our audience

These are but a few of them and there will be more costs along the way that we can't even imagine yet.

We also want to expand what we do. In all honesty, the support we've received so far has shown us that all manner of things are possible. Having begun this great adventure with our travelling theatre, albeit in a simple way of telling tales and playing music, we meet people again and again who have dreamed what we dream and love what we love, people with staggering and multifarious talents. We'd like to include more people in this project, so that we can offer not just what we already do, but a whole array of dizzying and dazzling circus and fair-like wonders. This is going to take time and organisation and more vehicles and crew and a kitchen and... and so on and on and on...

We're going to do all this anyway. We have to. It's what we do. Your help as we do it will mean that we can do it sooner, and better and more brilliantly, with fireworks, or bright paint at the very least. We are getting good at turning dreams into reality - would you like to be part of this dream, by supporting us on here or in other ways? Step aboard - the journey is only just beginning...
