The Witchfinder General's relentlessly pursue the truth (OK, this one definitely doesn't work) or at least some version of it which I will accommodate by providing monthly posts about dog mushing - these could be videos, prose or photos. Through this tier you will meet the dogs, follow on runs and maybe even learn some mushing skills.

Burn aloft in a (digital) wicker effigy licked by the fires of knowledge (this is the best one yet). Here you will get behind the scenes comic book content, early access to new projects and news and a monthly Q&A in which I would be happy to chat about anything you'd like whether it be about comics, film stuff or dog mushing.

About Helen Mullane

Who am I?
Well this is a pretty far-reaching and profound question. In the interests of brevity I'll stick to the top-line. I am a comic book writer and dog musher. I am pretty niche. I spent many years working in the background of the film industry, in marketing, development and producing. I always thought my calling was to assist other people who have stories to tell. But in the last few years I've connected with my own voice and realised that I have a point of view, I have stories to tell. This initial part of my journey culminated in the release of Nicnevin and the Bloody Queen, a graphic novel that is part family drama and part dark folk fantasy. My elevator pitch is "Fish Tank meets Children of the Stones" and if that sounds good to you then you will dig Nicnevin

Why Patreon?
As far as I can tell, I am the only comic book writing dog musher in the whole world (if you're reading this and know another please intro us immediately so we can be together). There are a host of possible reasons for this scarcity, since each profession requires its own particular brand of madness to embark on, but I think a key reason might be to do with the profound lack of profitability of both professions.
Both my callings are labours of love. But they are also labours of...well...labour. They require a deep well of passion and a massive investment of time to work. It will be years before I see any  return on the work I am doing over these years and unfortunately it's a close to unsustainable lifestyle financially. So I thought I would try Patreon as a way to support my work until my work can support me.

Where will the money go?
Your (maybe, I hope so! If not, then someone else's, fingers crossed) money will go in the first instance to helping to relieve a bit of the financial burden of being a $500/month earner, thus freeing up key parts of my brain from focusing on *constant worry* and *fear* to make stuff instead. I have recently had to make the very difficult decision to leave the racing kennel I've lived and worked at for years because it is financially unsustainable. I have had to take stock and try to find a way forward. So for the next winter and on until I reach my financial goals I am going to work at a tour kennel, not racing at all and saving every penny I can find to be able to get my own cabin and my own team.
If this Patreon is successful, alongside my writing, the ultimate goal is to be able to return to dog racing on my own terms, with my own team, and forge a life as a comic book writing dog musher.

What's the end game?
My ultimate goal is to live in a little cabin in the wood, writing comics and mushing dogs.
I have competed in long distance races for the last 4 years, finishing 400km and 650km races. I want to pursue this in the years to come, and eventually take part in the most competitive races in the world, Norway's Finnmarksløpet and The Iditarod in Alaska.
Equally, I want to write comics from my singular perspective and tell stories with amazing collaborators. I hope this will mostly happen within the traditional writer - publisher - reader model, but sometimes the gap between completing one project and getting the next one off the ground is really really long. Your cash could help bridge that gap, and potentially allow for my more out of the box stories, which seem at this point at least to not be of interest to publishers, to see the light of day.
Goals
$23.73 of $140.47 per month
My first goal is £100 per month - an amount that would make a massive difference to my state of mind.

I would spend half of it on upgrading my internet here in Sweden and the other half would take care of some bills.

With that new browsing speed and some worries off my shoulders I will have more headspace free for the important stuff, creating! If I hit this goal I will create an extra monthly blog post - I will create a poll for my patrons to see whether that should be dog mushing or comic book related.
