These people are Houseless Not Homeless.

Thank you so much for coming here to learn about The Homeless Charity.

We are advocates and innovators in the space of houseless support.

We stand by the belief that the houseless of American, and much of the world, are severely under-served and often criminalized. They are a product of systemic hopelessness along with a throw-away mentality imposed on them by society and government.

We will never solve houselessness until we respect these people, understand who they are and offer them a hand up to find their path in society.

The Homeless Charity 501(c)(3) seeks to meet the houseless where they are today to get them to where they want to go tomorrow by offering transitional support services that bridge the gap between street living and house living.

Our Day Center serves as a drug-free community for the houseless, run by the houseless. Our day center offers three meals a day, a food pantry, laundry facilities, showers, bathrooms, internet cafe, drug rehab classes and meetings, a makers school and storage for belongings.

We now are purchasing homes for transitional micro-shelters. These micro-shelters allow us to match up a small group of houseless individuals based on needs and circumstances. Each micro-shelter has about 5 people in it.

Our tent village was recently made illegal by The City of Akron. We are severely disappointed in the lack of vision, compassion and even basic curiosity Akron government has shown their houseless citizens. But this will not stop us from continuing to innovate in this space and advocate for these people that are continually demeaned and oppressed by their governing officials. We now have much more work to do and need your help more than ever.

We must continue our dedication to supporting and sheltering the houseless of Akron. We cannot allow hurdles to dissuade our work in this critical humanitarian pursuit.

Moving forward we will offer:

  • Houseless Makerspace: We are finding the houseless are great entrepreneurs. We support that strength through creating maker studios, stores and online sales.
  • Outreach: Our Day Center will continue to be the center and foundation of our outreach. Warmth, Food, Clothing, Camping Gear and Entrepreneurial Skills. We maintain a self-run space of dignity and empowerment for the houseless population.
  • Advocacy: There is simply no political will for local governments to care for the houseless. The houseless are currently seen as nothing more than a nuisance to be hidden away.
    We must change this thinking.
  • Micro-Shelters: Using Houses as Shelters: Houses are the easiest, least expensive, most efficient ways to currently shelter the houseless of Akron. Tents and even tiny homes currently have no political interest and will likely be fought every step of the way.

One of the innovations we bring to the homeless cause is that our cost per person is incredibly low.

A study by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development found it costs, per month:

  • $1,614 to house a family in a shelter
  • $813 for transitional housing
  • $881 for permanent housing

We are buying houses in Akron Ohio for $5000. This allows us to drastically change the model of how to innovate this entire industry.

We also continue to operate our day center which has showers, laundry, food, clothing, computers and now maker spaces. We find that houseless people often make great entrepreneurs. We have stations where people can do things like bike repair, screen printing, web design, knife sharpening. The list of entrepreneurship skills grows constantly.

Your contribution of $20/month goes a long way in helping us with these programs.

Platinum Level Membership
$50 or more per month

While this is just the cost of a cell phone bill, it is still a significant contribution.

A membership at this level can do so much. It can pay a subsidized month of rent for a person having trouble making their $50/month rent. It can help someone pay their cell phone bill so they can talk to their family and case workers. It helps pay our utility bills at our houses.

The point is: it is significant and it helps a great deal.

Inner Circle Membership
$75 or more per month
At this substantial level of membership you are having a direct effect on our program.
Because our overhead is so low, $75 goes a long way.
President's Level Membership
$100 or more per month
This level of giving is above and beyond. You are changing the shape and future of our organization.
All we can say here is: Thank you!
Goals
$1,128 of $1,500 per month
Now you're getting serious. The entire center costs us about $5000 to run each month. We have renters upstairs that pay us about $2000 each month. We are now more than half way to breaking even.
