House of Pod is helping people like you become world-class podcasters -- in Denver!

We are a production company. We are a community space. We are a podcast incubator. And with your help, we're opening up our professional recording studio and coworking space to the community to amplify underrepresented voices.

The Journey

Do you remember what you were doing one year ago? I do. After looking for, and not finding, a centrally located quiet recording space, we decided to move into this old, incredibly eccentric white building called the Olympic Auditorium. Everyone thought, "this must be a church, right?" But it wasn't a church. It was a retired Olympic boxing arena that had been converted to a pseudo-residence, pseudo-practice space for musical artists.

I remember unpacking thousands of dollars of recording equipment, all bought using savings I had hoped would go towards buying a house with my ex-boyfriend. Instead, it went towards a 16-channel sound board, four mics, a preamp, and a bunch of other gear I didn't yet understand. At that time, as I set the equipment down on the floor, it would vibrate and shake from the blaring sounds of rock and heavy metal bands that practiced in the rooms beneath our space.

It felt like an impossible dream. How would we ever open a community podcasting studio and incubator in this space? I predicted we would be out after one month and fought back tears of frustration as I plugged my ears and uncoiled wires and cords in our studio. Matthew Simonson, then a volunteer, stepped up to the plate and helped me sort all the inputs and outputs.

A week passed. Then a month. We memorized the timing of every band practice to mitigate conflict with our growing membership. We proved to our landlord that we were serious, and he moved the bands to another part of the building.

And here we are. A year later. And our space is beautifully, peacefully quiet.

That's not the only thing that's happened. We've launched a number of big shows for clients including SAPIENS, which made it to Apple's New and Noteworthy list and climbed all the way to number three on the Apple Podcasts' science and medicine chart. We've had over 75 members and individuals come and record in our studio. We've taught over 25 classes and workshops. We launched an education non-profit focused on programming for voices on the margins. And at the end of the year, when things were winding down and everything was cold, and snowy, and dark, our team gathered together to face the biggest question of all...

Are we going to do this again?

The answer is yes. But it came with a caveat. If we're going to continue, we want to make it good.

So we decided we would all take a break, and come back into 2019 with this idea that we spent a year proving has value and can work, and we would do just that. We'd make it good.

  • We would invest in a full-blown studio remodel
  • We would organize an internal month-long boot camp to revamp our services and train each other
  • We would launch a new schedule of classes and curriculum
  • We would offer a new line of offerings and shows
But how would we do it all? Especially with only a fraction of the funds we'd need to pull it all off?

Well. We got down on our hands and knees and started wherever we could. We met and planned, we built a brand new website -- that you will be the first to see -- complete with a boatload of new services and classes. And we painted, scrubbed, stapled, hammered, and wired to start a beautiful studio transformation. If you haven't seen it yet, you should definitely come check it out.

We've come so unbelievably far. And I'm beyond proud of our team and our community who show up every day to support us, record awesome new content, and continue to build this thing with us.

But, there's still more to do. That's why we're kicking off this Patreon campaign.

Let's make it together.

Every dollar we raise will go towards completing our studio remodel, building editing stations for members, improving our space, and sponsoring memberships for youth and others who cannot afford regular recording. In exchange, you will get some rad perks and recognition, like launching a secret podcast, just for you.

As we roar into year two, we're out to make this whole thing really good. And we are grateful to each of you for reading this note, supporting this campaign, and/or sharing it with your friends. You are what makes the difference. Thank you for lighting up our world.

With respect, love, gratitude, high fives, and all the fierceness,

Cat, Paul, Matthew, and the House of Pod crew
