About Humanities Behind Bars

HBB is an abolitionist network of radical group-based study and mutual aid with an approach to grassroots movements that is grounded in education, agitation, and organizing.

Prison Education Program: We enter the facility with the intention of disrupting the practice of educational, social, and psychological isolation. Our community education initiative includes making the prison industrial complex visible, calling attention to its inherent harm, and advocating for abolishing the entrenched belief that prisons are a form of safety for society at large.

Pen-Pal Program: We cultivate inside-outside alliances through letter-writing with incarcerated comrades. Maintaining regular contact with people incarcerated is a powerful form of resistance because the Prison Industrial Complex is constructed to deter people from communication and is designed to isolate people and build barriers of human contact.

757 Solidarity Bail Fund: We post bail in the Tidewater/Hampton Roads area of Virginia. This is a rotating fund, meaning that we will continue to support community members who remain behind bars in pretrial detention simply because they cannot post bail.

Through both direct and indirect action, we collaborate with other local grassroots groups committed to creating alternatives to incarceration. Our collective vision of building networks of care and mutual aid guide our strategies in organizing as we work to envision a world without cops, cages, and state-sanctioned violence.
