Hypheric Games (HG) are creating Cosrin Classic and we want you to help make it a reality! We are an indie game company looking to bring a modern spin to a beloved, retro classic: text-based, multiplayer RPGs.

Cosrin Classic will be a revamped version of Cosrin using modern technology and game development techniques.

Cosrin was originally produced by Online Games Company, Ltd (OGC). Cosrin Classic will use officially licensed intellectual property and game content from OGC! Through the use of immersive content from the realm of Cosrin, we intend to reignite the rich storytelling and role-playing community that is lacking in today’s multiplayer RPG adventures.

The Problem With Old School Text-Based RPGs

Historically, multi-user dungeon (MUD) game engines were not developed with rigorous software engineering practices - or at at time long ago when industry-standard engineering practices and capabilities hadn’t even begun to be established, which led to rigid architecture constraints and a lack of attention to maintainability and scalability.

Many of these MUD servers were either originally open source software, or they were made open source software after the original developer(s) had moved on to other areas of interest. This made it very easy for anyone who wanted to make their own game to do so; however, it tied them heavily to the original architecture and design of these popular, open source servers.

Because of this, MUD game communities have stagnated in their lack of new activity, content, and gameplay mechanics - a direct result of difficult-to-deploy engine enhancements and content updates.

Cosrin Classic: The Vision

Cosrin Classic is a modern day implementation of Legends of Cosrin where, unlike previous incarnations, Cosrin Classic is built from the ground up to enable dynamic updates and features. This will result in swift bug fixes which can be deployed in days instead of months or years.

After the launch of Cosrin Classic, our focus will shift and lessons learned will be harnessed in the development of the next game in the Cosrin universe, codenamed “Arokkol”.

Legends of Cosrin versus Cosrin: A New Dawn

We chose Legends of Cosrin as our base for Cosrin Classic because we want to harness the “nostalgia factor” of the original game. We feel that the original gods such as Kali, Leoni, Valtera, and others, provide a deeper-rooted and stronger lore to build on top of for players.

Many areas and pieces of content in Cosrin: A New Dawn are incomplete in functionality when compared to the features of the Horizon engine, and our intent for Cosrin Classic is to focus on engine architecture in preparation for the next game in the Cosrin universe, codenamed “Arokkol”, rather than trying to complete the content design work that would be required to bring both sides into alignment.

With these two factors considered, we believe a basis in Legends of Cosrin provides the most complete gaming experience that can be provided in the Cosrin universe at this time.

Looking to the Future

We intend to harness today’s cloud technology, programming languages, and software development practices to build a dynamic game engine that will serve as the foundation of future games, the first of which is codenamed “Arokkol”. This new engine will be called “Mercury”.

This will provide the foundation for an immersive, frequently changing world that supports our vision of various storylines within the community. Specifically, we will be able to rapidly deploy changes to code and content on the order of days, rather than months. Our Game Masters (GMs) will be empowered with new and refined tools to create immersive roleplay scenarios, well beyond the scope previously available in either Legends of Cosrin or Cosrin: A New Dawn.

Additionally, we will be able to consider and implement modern elements of today’s games, giving them a spin and finding a place for them within the text-based RPG genre. This includes, but is not limited to, achievement systems, true guild/clan systems, modernized dungeon and combat systems, and a fully-developed scripting system for more immersive, non-player character interactions.

Who is Hypheric Games? Why are you capable of creating a modern day MUD engine?
  • Hypheric Games (HG) is a US-based company established in 2015 for the purpose of fostering further development of games within the Cosrin universe.
  • Our core members are Cosrin veterans dating back to the 90’s, and HG has many software engineering professionals at its disposal with over 30 years of combined experience in both software development and project management.
How will Patreon funds be used by Hypheric Games?
  • Funds prior to Cosrin Classic launch will be used to pay for software development tools, web and game server hosting costs, and creation of creative assets necessary to facilitate the launch of Cosrin Classic.
  • After Cosrin Classic launch, funds will be used to pay for the development of the next Cosrin game, codenamed “Arokkol”.
How are OGC and HG related?
  • OGC and HG are separate companies. HG has collaborated with OGC to secure a license to use intellectual property and game content from Legends of Cosrin and Cosrin: A New Dawn, including website and original development content never before released to the public. HG intends to produce further games for the development of lore in the Cosrin universe.
What is the planned profit/subscription model for Cosrin Classic?
  • We intend for Cosrin Classic to be free-to-play. We are hopeful that funds kindly donated each month by our patrons will cover server and graphic design costs.
  • We can confidently state that we are against pay-to-win, “loot box” purchasing, or excessively lavish microtransaction models.
What features are planned for the launch of Cosrin Classic?
  • We intend for Cosrin Classic to mirror the engine functionality of Legends of Cosrin as closely as possible.
  • However, we do plan to make enhancements to core network capabilities, background channel communications and standards, and increased game command length (since even the original Twitter length was longer!). This includes features such as extended color support, websocket support, UTF-8, as well as actual TELNET negotiation and sub-negotiation.
  • We intend to address any game-breaking level bugs, whether the root cause is in the server code or the game content.
  • We may implement quality-of-life gameplay changes - both content and engine - that were introduced in Cosrin: A New Dawn, as time allows.
When will Cosrin Classic officially launch?
  • Cosrin Classic is being developed as a “spare time” project; however, the development team has dedicated a specific day each week to work in furtherance of the game’s launch. As such, establishing a launch window at this time would only serve to provide expectations founded on the least amount of information we currently have available.
  • However, we know that providing no information on this topic doesn’t help provide a clear picture for anyone. As such, our current plan is to release developer updates periodically to demonstrate efforts and act as an outward commitment of forward progress.
How much content will be available at launch?
  • At a minimum, all content publicly available prior to the launch of Cosrin: A New Dawn in 2011 will be available at the launch of Cosrin Classic.
Why base Cosrin Classic off of Legends of Cosrin, rather than Cosrin: A New Dawn?
  • We want to harness the “nostalgia factor” of the original game. We feel that the original gods such as Kali, Leoni, Valtera, and others, provide a deeper-rooted and stronger lore to build on top of.

Is there an opportunity for Alpha or Beta testers to test Cosrin Classic?
  • Yes, we will have a series of Alpha and Beta tests leading up to the launch of Cosrin Classic, all of which will be private and result in character wipes/resets prior to the actual launch of the game.
  • In addition to the tiers that provide Alpha and Beta access as part of their perks, we may also elect to hold raffle- and random-style access grants for a small number of patrons at various points of the development life cycle.
What will happen to the lore and storylines that occurred during Cosrin: A New Dawn?
  • The lore and storylines from Cosrin: A New Dawn are valid and canon, and continue to evolve with time. Cosrin Classic is simply a revisit to the past universe.
  • As you may recall, the establishment of Cosrin: A New Dawn came about by way of a fracture created between two realms, caused by Valtera getting Prince Jurano’s scepter. This even allowed a one-way transition of player characters from Legends of Cosrin to Cosrin: A New Dawn.
  • At that point, the game histories would diverge into their own storylines - none of that is changing.
What will happen to the current Cosrin: A New Dawn game server?
  • It will continue to operate as it has been.
