About

Hello! I’m Idzie Desmarais, grown unschooler and author of the popular blog I’m Unschooled. Yes, I Can Write., which has been going strong for over a decade.

Both on that blog and on my associated Facebook page I explore unschooling and self-directed lifelong learning, youth rights, respectful parenting, and social justice. Pulling from lifelong personal experience, I debunk misconceptions, dig into what animates this style of living and learning, and what political forces affect and motivate us as a community. And perhaps most importantly, I am always exploring how to live more respectfully with children and young people. My far-left politics of anarchism and feminism are woven deeply into my beliefs about unschooling, and I try to always look at issues of education and parenting through an anti-oppression, pro-liberation lens.

I believe the way we treat children and approach education has the capacity to change the world, and the more people who are questioning and criticizing the current models and advocating for greater respect and justice, the better.

What is Patreon?

My blog and Facebook page, though labours of love, are nevertheless labour. I have been spending a great deal of time, effort, and stress to share these online spaces with the world for my entire adult life, and I don’t make any money from it. Or at least, I didn’t until I started using Patreon in 2016. Patreon is a platform that allows readers and fans who want to provide financial support to a creator whose work they love to do so in a simple, sustained way by pledging an amount of their choice each month. And in exchange, they get access to content not found anywhere else. All financial supporters of mine on Patreon get access to everything I post here, which will always include one patron-exclusive essay/article a month, along with assorted other digital content (favourite link roundups, media recommendations, etc.). I understand that everyone is in a different financial situation, so it’s important to me that even those only able to make the smallest contribution have access to all of the same content, and know that I value every single supporter equally, and that I am deeply grateful for every person choosing to send some of their hard earned money my way.

How do I use my Patreon earnings?

For many years I’ve gotten extremely frequent migraine headaches, and that, combined with the anxiety disorder (possibly disorders) I’ve lived with since childhood have greatly impacted my ability to work any type of “normal” job. With that in mind, my Patreon earnings, small though they might be, have a very real and important impact on my life and wellbeing. I’m finally on a medication that does a great job of controlling migraine attacks, and thanks to patrons, the money I make here has been enough to completely cover the cost of the medications I need to function almost every month of the past year. That’s huge! If I get more patrons, and a greater income, that will help me access further health care that’s only partially covered or not covered at all in my province’s health care plan (like psychotherapy, dental care, eye care, etc.).

In conclusion

Patreon allows me to build relationships with readers, help me get the financial support that makes my life easier (and healthier), and provide a space where I can share content I don’t post anywhere else.

No matter how much you pledge, how long you remain a patron, or even whether you become a patron or not, your support and encouragement mean the world to me. Thank you for being here!
Goals
90% complete
If I reach this goal it would cover all my monthly medication, supplements, and the like freeing me from a bit more stress, and allowing me to focus more fully on the important things (like stressing about other things. Also writing)!

I could also buy a little more coffee, so that would be nice.
