Hi there! I'm Alyssia Lain Farlight - or just Lain for short - a writer and game developer and I run the studio Ikonoclast where I'm hard at work on developing and writing games with a focus on providing better representation for girls like myself; i.e. games full of girls who love other girls! Games with diverse casts that are inclusive of all manner of LGBTQ people; gay/lesbian/bi/pan, trans, non-binary, asexual, aromantic? Queer fiction by queer creators! I want to be able to freely create games with all kinds of wonderful characters that represent people so often excluded from typical mainstream games~

I've always loved visual novels and interactive fiction, so when deciding what to work on with my own studio it was immediately obvious to me that I wanted to make those sorts of games. I also wanted to create games which would actually represent my own thoughts, feelings, and experiences and the things I view as important. I want to create works full of queer characters, of the emotional and interpersonal connections between them, and be able to draw from my own experiences and the world around us~

The reality is that right now I'm just a lone creator and both the costs and energy involved with maintaining life and being able to work on projects that feel meaningful to me and would represent the kinds of goals Ikonoclast represents are incredibly high. I am currently covering the expenses of the studio and projects out of pocket and so I rely on Patreon to offset some of those costs. I also have always wanted to grow Ikonoclast to be a larger entity than just myself. I want to be able to create more games, bring on board other creators, and work together to make larger and even more inclusive games~
Funds are used to cover living costs, software licenses, and with more support Ikonoclast would be able to hire artists, composers, and other collaborators to help make projects even higher quality than I'm currently able to manage on my own~

Since Ikonoclast currently is just myself I am working on a single project with a relatively small scope. Alongside this I am also going to be releasing asset packs for use with Unity to help further offset running costs of the studio, these will be comprised of development tools I use whilst building visual novels and small bundles of cool things I develop alongside the main project. I hope that this project can then allow us to expand and be able to work on something with a higher scope and a bigger development budget~

Unnamed Project (Codename Eldritch)

This project began as an experiment in procedural generation and expanded from there to become a game project unto itself! It will be a visual novel with mechanics inspired heavily by games such as 80 Days, Fallen London/Sunless Seas, and other mechanics driven interactive fiction. I have been working on the underlying procedural systems which not only generate the world space but also utilise techniques from the realms of IF and AI research to procedurally create narratives by using content authored by human input and fitting it together piece by piece to create cohesive stories. This includes AI driven characters who have unique personalities and traits based on a data-driven model of their emotions, memories, and relationship to others and the world around them, and a world model which maps the various locations within the city setting all the way down to individual buildings and rooms.

But that's just the foundation, what about the game itself~??

Have you ever read or watched something and just sat there afterwards thinking "I want to make something that evokes those same feelings!" I've had this thought more times than I can count, but this time I decided to actually channel it in to a new project! Taking major inspiration from the manga Girls' Last Tour which left me in that state of just sitting there dwelling on it after I finished reading its conclusion and borrowing from work done on a previous project that also took the usual post-apocalyptic setting and tried to mix it up a bit and do something different. This will be a game about two girls exploring the ruins of a massive towering city structure from humanity's past, a relic of an age before the cataclysm which nearly wiped out all of humanity.

But where I hope to do something different is in shifting the setting to be more of a post-post-apocalypse setting, for want of a better term. This city isn't some monolithic abandoned place, far from it in fact. The city provides shelter, it provides many necessities for survival in the harsh post-cataclysm world, and so settlers have moved in to occupy the city in the absence of its original owners. Now the lower floors of the city have begun to grow and people are adapting the ruins to serve their individual needs.

So the game will be a story of how the two girls explore this massive city structure, how they interact with the various people who now live there, and just why the people they meet seem so unwilling to answer their questions about what they might encounter as they continue their efforts to reach the highest point in the city.

Why are they trying to reach the top? What is it about the upper levels that worries the citizens so much? What role does the player serve? Is Lain also performing an experiment on placing the player as narrator and the girls being their own distinct entities?? Gosh, let's find out~

But the real question is... does that codename imply monster girls?? (Yes, yes it does!)

Needless to say, it is thanks to the support of all the wonderful patrons of Ikonoclast that I am able to work on the above project and the development tools that I'm using to build it. Every little bit of support means the world to me and every amount pledged helps us build a studio that can deliver on engaging narratives filled with queer characters and girls' love, so from the bottom of my heart I want to thank all of you who choose to support me in this venture~

All the love~
