Infamous Musician is creating Blog Content

Hey there! I'm Cody Slingerland. In 2014, I created a blog called  Infamous Musician. While the site started out as a college assignment, since then it's evolved into a powerful resource for DIY musicians.

Over the years, I've written blog posts on topics like home recording, production, gear reviews, and marketing tips for musicians. I've put out a ton of free content and I'm glad to see the site has helped those who have stumbled across it. I'm very happy with how Infamous Musician has evolved and I will continue to put out free blog posts whenever I can.

However, I'd really love to do more!

One of the biggest things I'd like to do on Infamous Musician is review music promotion services and tactics for building a successful music career.

While I've written a few music promotion posts already (like my free guide on building a website), I want to take a journalistic, almost scientific approach to pinpoint the best places musicians should focus their time and money.

With so many outlets available (like Spotify, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Instagram, Deezer, Apple Music, etc.) and in most case, limited budgets, it can be overwhelming as a musician to decided where to focus. Additionally, with paid promotion services like SubmitHub and PlaylistPush available, it only further complicates things.

  • Should you focus on building an email list?
  • Should you try to increase your followesr on Instagram?
  • Should you put most of your time into pitching Spotify playlists?
  • What's the best place to spend your time and money? And what are the most effective strategies for any given outlet?

That's what I want to find out and share with you.

Here are some example posts I'd like to do:

  • An in-depth review of paid promotion services like SubmitHub, PlaylistPush, Crosshair, Playlist Pump, and so on.
  • In-depth reviews of other helpful musician services like ReverbNation's Crowd Review.
  • A how-to guide on Facebook advertising for musicians (What ad types work best? How can you decrease costs and improve performance? Is Facebook advertising even worth it for musicians these days?).
  • A how-to guide on growing an Instagram following.
  • In-depth reviews of other advertising methods for musicians (Instagram ads, YouTube ads, Spotify ads, ReverbNation Promote It, Feature.fm ads, and so on). Are any of these advertising methods worth it for musicians? Which ones deliver the best "bang for the buck"?

I will continue to try to do some of these posts as I try to grow my own music career. However, my budget will be limited and the number and frequency of posts I can put out will be slow on my own.

By becoming one of my Patrons, you can help me put out more content like the examples above so that we can discover where we should spend our time and money as musicians.

Additionally, you'll be able to help choose which outlets to review (via voting polls) so I can make sure I review the services and promotion methods that matter the most to you!

If you are able to contribute, feel free to choose any of the pledge amounts you can. Every little bit helps! I look forward to putting out these guides and I appreciate all of your support!

Thanks,

Cody
