Insides and Outsides is an upcoming podcast about the day-to-day lives of people with serious and chronic illnesses and disabilities and their experiences in the medical system. I am your host, Caroline Moore-Kochlacs, a Ph.D. neuroscientist and a metastatic breast cancer patient. I am interested in people's invisible coping strategies, the lives they build atop their illnesses and disabilities, the cracks in the medical system people get lost in, and the equitable and patient care focused medical system we can build.

I will begin the podcast with my own story, interviewing family and friends to tell the story of my incurable cancer diagnosis three years ago and how we lived and coped through the difficult early days. The shared theme of the first set of episodes will be Quality of Life and what it means medically and to patients. I will be speaking to friends and from my own experience about chronic incapacitating conditions that lack a clear diagnosis and the struggle of slogging through the medical system to find some treatment or stability. Another early episode will explore the experience, causes, and treatment of nausea.

How can you help?

Money is great. Insides and Outsides is currently supported by me and my time.* The more funding I receive from Patreon while I'm in the start up phase, the more time I dedicate to the podcast.  You can sign up here on Patreon to give as little as $1/month or give me one time donation to offset start-up costs at paypal.me/caromk. (No option to do so on Patreon.)

If you become a Patron or Follower, I will take you behind the scenes of creating Insides and Outsides to show you what it is like to put together this podcast and solicit your feedback during the process. I will also host a hang out for all my patrons before I share the podcasts with the world to answer questions and share my experience. You can find the posts here on Patreon or in your email inbox.

* I do receive free studio time and mentorship from MIT Media Lab. And lots of helpful convos/advice/interview practice from friends.

Rough timeline

Winter 2018 - Start interviewing, draft first 2-3 episodes for feedback and potential sponsors
Spring 2018 - Continuing producing episodes and interviewing, approach potential sponsors for funding
Summer 2018 - Release first "season" of Insides and Outsides

Tiers
Half an avocado
$1 or more per month 5 patrons
Your monthly dollar will help pay for my time and costs. As I learn to create the Insides and Outsides podcast, you will receive all my behind-the-podcast Patreon posts and eventually all the episodes. This content will be available for free too, but you will know inside that $1 of it each month was made specifically for you. Thank you!
Latte
$5 or more per month 7 patrons
For less than the cost of a latte + an avocado, you will receive everything in the previous tier PLUS $4 of my behind-the-scenes ramblings will belong to you. You choose which ones!
Craft beer
$10 or more per month 6 patrons
Everything above AND a monthly virtual toast will be held in your honor. My alcohol intake is not what it once was, but at the very least I will toast you with my daily weird salty Phosphate drink.
Hand-crafted upcycled bone broth bowl
$50 or more per month 1 patron
You have money to spend and you're spending it on supporting this podcast!!! Which doesn't even exist yet! You will be inaudibly named as the funds behind one interview I conduct each month. I am so ridiculously grateful that I will send you a small crafty token of gratitude if you'll let me. It will not be a hand-crafted upcycled bone broth bowl.
Goals
$140 of $500 per month
$500 a month will:
  • Pay for some of my time working on the podcast (and allow me to dedicate more time to it)
  • Offset the costs of microphones, software, workshops, etc
  • Allow me to set aside funds to pay for other professionals to work on the podcast (editing, music, etc)
  • Demonstrate interest in Insides and Outsides to potential sponsors
